Soundgarden is going to be playing Bumbershoot, which is a music and arts festival in Seattle. It's a 3 day festival with all kinds and manner of music acts playing on a mess of different stages. Some great and historic acts have been featured there.

Soundgarden question for the experts.

Ben Shepard, the bass player.
He joined when they were already on the way up, just before BadMotorFinger, I think, replacing Hiro whatsisname.
Now, on a music board I frequent, I was reading a thread about them, and out of say, twelve people who contributed, at least ten of them had a story where at a gig, Shepard had a tantrum and threw his bass / smashed an amp / knocked something over / stormed off stage / whatever. That in turn reminded me that he always came off as an angry bastard back in the day. So my question is this:
Since we're talking about potentially ten out of twelve gigs featuring a meltdown by this guy, who was essentially a fan who passed an audition, how did the little shit get away with it? If it was Cornell, I could see that the other dudes would have to put up with it, but this guy? I would've thought he'd be walking on eggshells, since he was an easily replaceable replacement who got into the big leagues with a minimum of effort. Anyone know how he managed it?
Did he have pictures of Cornell blowing a donkey?

That does seem strange at best. Like you say, he was a replacement already. I could see not wanting to oust a founding member. Could it have been staged?
On the topic of Soundgarden, has anyone heard Cornell lately? I'm wondering how his voice is holding up. He certainly never held back, back in the day.

Some guy sez:

Actually, I'm quite impressed with all the recent live crap I've heard, the band sounds pretty good and even Cornell is singing ok. He really nails some of the high shit on some of the older material.

The real test is Say Hello 2 Heaven.... the song he did with Temple of the Dog. He gets crazy high on that one.

All about Shepard, from Soundgarden gig-goers:
Quote
That guy was always such a little bitch back in the day. Anything at all went wrong at a show and he would get all pissy and start pushing the amp rigs over and breaking shit and throwing a tantrum like a fucking 5 year old.
Quote
This. He totally ruined the last Soundgarden show I saw. A storm rolled in and they had to postpone part of the set. When they finally came back out he was all pissy and then the storm returned and ended their set altogether and he threw his bass, knocked over his amp and flipped off the crowd and made the "suck it" gesture to his crowd.
Like it was the crowd's fault that the weather was shit...
Quote
At the LA Olympic Auditorium in 1994 he threw his bass down and stormed off mid set. I could see some woman blocking the back door so he couldn't walk out of the building. The band just kept playing and went into the next song like nothing happened. He rejoined about halfway thru that song.
Quote
This. Anyone see him at Lollapalooza '92 at Great Woods? What a fucking douchebag.
Quote
So true about him freaking out at gigs. He did that in Denver on the SuperUnknown Tour too.
Quote
Intersting to see the consistent notes in this thread. I saw Soundgarden twice and he was a boob both times. Hissy fits and such...........
Douche.
In a two page thread! How did he get away with it?

Fuck, maybe the rest of the band are pussies, or as you say he's got pictures of them fucking rabbits or something. Who the fuck does he think he is though? He's the replacement bass player.

The crowd needs to start booing in unison the next time that shit happens. Concert tickets cost a lot of dough, and some no name jackass is ruining the experience for people. The rest of the band looks a little dickish for letting this shit continue. Those guys are supposed to be professional. Smashing guitars as part of the act are one thing, but I guy walking off during a set, there's just no excuse for that.

Maybe he clicked REALLY well with the drummer?
Ah fuck it, there's no excuse for a so-so bassist to pull off Axl Rose tantrums.

Exactly.... without Axl there is no G-n-R so you have to tolerate him, but this guy can be replaced by any competent bass player. There must be a million guys that could stand in for him. That would gladly stand in for him and not piss fortune away.

Ben Shepherd is responsible for the crappy filler that stopped Superunknown being the greatest Soundgarden album.
I can't recall any hissy fits from the two times I saw them though.
