I don't expect another masterpiece like Badmotorfinger, but I'm excited for this.  FIrst let me say I hate the whole "Seattle Sound", Grunge thing.  Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, etc were nothing more than kickass rock and roll.  However, they have a special place with me, because at the time they hit, Rock had hit an all time lull, and was almost invisible on the current scene.  Look for an article on this very thing soon......

I remember one time when my wife and I first started dating, and I made the claim that Chris Cornell belongs in the same category as the Robert Plants and Roger Daltreys.  She said I was crazy.  We were at a bar shooting pool.  I walked over to the jukebox and plunked down 50 cents on Say Hello To Heaven.  She said I was right.  She's now one of his biggest fans.

I really dig Chris's voice, and I'm not one to pay too much attention to singers.  If I could sing, I'd wanna sound just like him.

Yeah... I've always found the terms 'alternative' and 'grunge' useless and annoying. To me, it's just rock, a little more on the heavy side.  I remember once talking to a girl who liked FUGAZI, ROLLINS BAND, and STONE TEMPLE PILOTS telling me that she didn't like rock.  WTF!??  Are you sure??

I ALWAYS wondered what Mother Love Bone would have done had Andrew Wood not died.  He was a fucking poet, and Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were the main forces behind Pearl Jam.....well good Pearl Jam anyway.

It's been so long since good Pearl Jam, who remembers?

Ten was their best album.  Everything else pales in comparison.  You could tell they were hungry on that one.  By the time their second one -- vS, was it? -- hit, you could tell they were no longer hungry, and had instead gotten fat.

Eh -- I really like both Vs. AND Vitalogy (except for a couple waste of fucking time tracks -- but fuck -- even the Beatles had tracks that were pointless or full-of-themselves/full-of-shit).

And Chris Cornell -- at least for a fairly long stretch there -- has one of the greatest voices in rock n' roll over the past 20 years.  I even liked his stuff with Audioslave.

I think 10 was written largely without Eddie's influence.  The creative forces behind the band changed.

And Scot, couldn't agree more.

Yeah -- I agree the need for such labels was fairly useless.  It seemed like folks were backing away from the "Rock" label the way politicians were fearful of the word "liberal".  Both are examples of the idiocy that runs rampant throughout society over the past 20 years over the past 30 years over the past 40 years since time immemorial...

Grunge was just rock that skipped the glam influences and drew it's inspiration from the rock and punk of the early 70's.

Also, 1991 was the last great breath of hard-rock: Nirvana, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam rising to prominence, and established stars like G'N'R and Metallica releasing era defining albums. Most of the shitty hair metal was washed away. Fuck, even Izzy Stradlin's solo album from that year is a Faces-style delight. It was never that good again. I'm glad I was 16 then.

And you were 83.

74 dick-weed and not a day older.

Agree.  G-n-R started the revolution with Appetite.

Exactly. But 1991 is when all the paths converged, in my opinion. It's like, Metallica would never have been asked to play at the Freddie Mercury tribute any other year than 1992. Hard rock, played and written competently, was becoming mainstream in a good way. As I've said before, G'N'R and Metallica were "our" Zep and Sabbath - one, the self-indulgent, epic gig playing debouchees, the other, the hardcore, black, razor-sharp riffers all about the fans.
