for me, the subway fight sequence in no. 2 is hands down the most brilliant super hero sequence brought to life. It was like it was lifted right from the pages.

For a laugh read this take on it. According to these people, only Tobey McGuire can be Spider Man, and all of Spider Man's best villains have been used up, so no one will care about Spidey again. Oh and did you know Spiderman is only about angst and depression?

I'd have to watch it again. I mainly think of them being good while I'm watching them, and then forgetting about them on the bus home, more or less.

All of Spidey's best villains? Personally I'd keep Maguire if it meant 4 had the Sinister Six, even with a slightly different line-up.

Although I hated the 3rd installment -- I have to say rebooting it all over again seems and feels silly to me.  It's one thing when the initial film is utter dreck, ala Superman Returns or Hulk -- but here, they just had to recover from a lousy 3rd movie (that still made a ton of money anyway).

Then again, the crappy Batman & Robin (which was worse than Spidey 3 -- even I'd admit that) eventually led to the Nolan reboot...but the shame is losing a guy as talented and imaginative as Raimi can be.

Of course, I tend to take an odd amount of joy whenever a Marvel project goes awry, so my opinions could be a little skewed.

Totally agree with this. Either way, I'd rather concentrate on the Avengers movies.

I'm trying to abstain from Mojo and the inevitable fight that I feel will resurface as it returns. I would appreciate it if everyone would respect that and not give me any. Thank you.

This is the thing I've always hated about superhero movies in general-

1)- At some point the hero reveals his identity to someone he definately shouldn't (i.e. fluttering eyelids and a set of boobs) and (if there is more than one) at least one of the villains, thus destroying the whole "work hard at keeping a secret identity" thing that's been a part of comics since the beginning.
2) The death of the villain (especially Bat and Spider villains).  These guys have never been compelling because they caused the hero trouble once, but because they've clashed over and over again and the hero hasn't simply killed them.  These villains always seem out to earn the respect of the hero (as evidenced by 'monologuing') and that's why they NEVER just pull a gun and shoot the hero in the face the first instant they get.  They keep coming back.

In simple- to make a kick-ass super-hero movie-
A) keep the villain alive (it's harder than it looks) and

B) Keep the secret identity secret!

Agreed.  That entire bit, from the fight to Spidey stopping the runaway train to the people rallying and Big Pussy standing up for him... THAT'S what the fuck a superhero movie should feel like.

I thought Maguire was perfect.  Could someone else do it?  Sure.  But I like Maguire in the role.

Was 3 total shit?  Absolutely.  Fucking terrible, actually.  ...except Sandman.  I liked Thomas Hayden Church in the role.

I think they're nuts for talking reboot so soon.

Well I hope they have some people in mind to take this franchise over.  Wasn't Fincher interested at one point?  I'd like to see what he would do with Spidey, but I don't see him getting the control he would want.

Oh and I liked Spidey 3... I think I'm the only one that did.

Agree with everything here -- including Thomas Hayden Church -- THAT piece of casting was actually good...it was just the movie that wasn't.

Also -- I liked the subway car battle scene in S2 -- don't know if I'd say it would be my favorite superhero sequence -- in fact, I just found it online (youtube) and watched it again.  It is indeed a cool sequence -- but being a New Yorker -- I have a few too many issues with the scene that keep me from embracing it as much as most folks would.

I can explain those reasons another time -- I don't wanna look like I'm dumping on the scene -- because as far as superhero/action sequences go -- it really is quite good.

Plus, don't like the fact that his mask is off (and thus can now be identified by dozens of people).

Oh, I have no doubt that much of the scene was unrealistic, but since I'm already suspending disbelief, why not go a little further, you know? Smiley

I know, I know...and I can be the biggest hypocrite when it comes to that shit -- knocking other people for not suspending their disbelief as something is supposed to be a fantasy or what-have-you -- and then I get caught up on details I have problems accepting.  It reminds me of how hard it was for me to believe John McClain could really get all around the entire city of New York in record time back in DH3w/aV.

-Disliked SPIDEY 3, hate VENOM in general, but loved SANDMAN
-Hated how they felt they needed to tie SANDMAN into Uncle Ben's death
-Loved the subway battle in SPIDEY 2
-Hate how in most super hero movies, at least a dozen people find out the hero's identity
