I've waited 49 years for this movie.
It was worth the wait.
Is it possible to wear out a blu-ray? We'll know after Marvel's The Avengers hits store shelves.

They should use that quote on the posters.

My God that was awesome. WB will never make anything like that.

I'm debating writing an overall review. My only concerns would be
(a) may be difficult to avoid spoilers -- though I suppose if there's "spoiler tags" -- it shouldn't be an issue
(b) getting vilified if I "dare" to say anything critical of the film. A review is a review, I don't know if I want to worry about defending it or myself.
Eh, come to think of it, nobody needs to hear my pontificating and bloviating. But if I summed it up in one sentence beyond my cheeky, just walked out of the movie theater at 2:45AM reaction:
It's a GREAT film for comic book fans, and a damn GOOD film for everybody else.

Scot, I'd like to hear what you have to say, but not before I see it myself tonight.
What if you wrote the review, and posted it in a week or so, after the majority here have seen it?

It trips me out how much the general public is behind this thing. I know many people who never have (and probably never will) touch a comic book who are way into this whole thing. I guess it was like this when the Burton Batman came out, but it feels like this has been even more transcendent than that was, because this is so much more like the comic book. It doesn't feel like anybody at the studio or somewhere said "Yeah, but comic books are for morons and losers, so we have to change it to appeal to a bigger audience." It feels like that audience has now been bent into place to get something like this down, and that's pretty amazing.

That actually makes a lot of sense. Who knows, I may have even seen it at least one more time at that point?
And just to be clear -- even my criticisms did NOT take away from my overall enjoyment of the film. Even with the flaws, what Whedon pulled off here is still fucking amazing, and as I said on FB -- Marvel fans in particular should be erecting a shrine to Lord Joss.

I had high expectations and that movie exceeded them.
Watching all the movies in a row was great as I was able to put a lot of pieces together than I would have otherwise forgot or not caught.
Great crowd in our theater. Lot's of fun comic/pop culture conversations between breaks.
I'll offer more thoughts on everything once my brain has a chance to recover.
On a quick side note, I will say that there were a couple surprises. The Spiderman trailer got me very interested but cautiously so with that story line. And conversely, the Dark Night Rises trailer did nothing for me. I'm sure I will love it but this trailer seemed pretty weak.
EDIT: One character totally stole the show in my theater. Hands down this character got the biggest reactions. Won't spoil anything but...just wow. I had a headache from being so fucking happy.
Got to agree about the Dark Knight Rises trailer. Made me yawn.

In my screening, the Battleship trailer was loudly booed (which made me laugh, and I "stage muttered" 'New York audiences'). Spidey got a decent hand, and the Dark Knight trailer got the biggest ovation of any trailer shown. Suffice to say, I didn't yawn, and am pleased that Nolan is still playing it "close to the vest" as far as revealing TOO much about the film.

Here's one I'll put forth for discussion, but let's not derail the thread, OK?
I've been to many, many midnight shows, for event movies I think it's the only way to go. I've been chasing the feeling of that first Star Wars buzz for years. You usually get the hardened movie fans and you get that interactivity and group feeling, it's lovely. You often make friends.
Well, so Avengers probably had the fullest theater I've been to since Dark Knight probably, so you had people there that usually don't do the midnight thing, take for example the couple in front of me that turned around and had a meltdown when I was making fun of the trailer with the guys around me for The Dictator (That was probably disappointing to most of the rest of the theater because it wasn't Batman).
"We didn't come here at midnight to listen to you talk!"
ah, these are people who don't usually do this, might be their first time. I suddenly knew what it felt like to be
that
guy.
The people around me were saying "Fuck you, this trailer sucks anyway" but nobody deserved to have their night ruined, so I leaned forward and said "I apologize" and they kept going off, so I said "That's why I apologized." I wanted to say "Once the movie actually starts, the theater will be rapt, we're here for the same thing you are, this is just kinda how the midnight show works." When people get mad and it boils up until they blow and you just look them in the eye and say you're sorry, they never know quite what to do, because they were looking for a fight and didn't get one.
Anyway:
What's proper midnight premiere etiquette? I don't talk during movies, ever. Does that include trailers, especially disappointing ones?

I think talking during a trailer is fine. We always have fun with that. People get nervous sometimes because we have all had those experiences with people who blather during a movie and they make the logical assumption that trailer talk will translate into movie talk. I don't get mad if someone says something. You handled them well and nailed the reasoning for their behavior,
With being in the marathon theater, we had the commonality of being fans going on and it was a blast. When the Avengers promo came on at the end of Captain America a Yes! Yes! Yes! chant broke out which was pretty fun.
Sorry you had a douchy crowd.
Oh yeah, and my theater booed the crap out of Battle Ship. I got a big laugh when I yelled something about Milton Bradley's sci-fi thriller Connect Four blowing this piece of shit out of the water.

I'm trying to abstain from Mojo and the inevitable fight that I feel will resurface as it returns. I would appreciate it if everyone would respect that and not give me any. Thank you.

I went t the theater to catch Saving Private Ryan and there were a bunch of teen boys who ran off at the mouth from the minute they walked in and all I could think was "Oh great, the movie's going to be ruined because of a bunch of fart jokes", but I was very glad that the minute the American flag popped up to open it, the theater was dead silent and stayed that way.
