Exclusive: Kevin Feige Gives Hints About the Marvel Sequels

by SuperHeroHype

April 15, 2012

Marvel's The Avengers is only a couple of weeks away and no one's more excited about it than us here at ComingSoon.net/SuperHeroHype, but some may already wonder what's in the future for Marvel Studios, especially since they've spent the last five years building up to this movie with the two "Iron Man" movies, The Incredible Hulk and last year's Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor.

There are four Marvel movies confirmed and scheduled, starting with Iron Man 3 on May 3, 2013, followed six months later by Thor 2 on November 15 and then the Captain America Sequel, just announced for April 4, 2014, five months after that. The fourth project is scheduled for May 16, 2014, but the title of that film has not been announced yet.

Since the other movies led up to The Avengers, we wondered how much of these three upcoming movies might lead up to the inevitable sequel to The Avengers.

"There will be various levels of seeds and Easter eggs," Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige told us in an exclusive interview last week. "The mandate is always to make the best movie possible regardless of where we're heading or what fun little Easter eggs we want to do. The movies have to work in and of themselves, so 'Iron Man' and 'Thor' will be more individualized and more focused just on their stories. 'Captain America' will be a pure Steve Rogers story, but have more in common with the backdrop of 'Avengers.'"

To us, this last part seemed to imply that we'd more than likely be seeing Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. play a part in the Cap sequel and while Feige wouldn't confirm this, he did hint about where each of the main three Avengers might be heading in their movies.

"Tony Stark can go home to Malibu and deal with his own circle of friends and his own sort of military industrial complex that the world of Stark Industries inhabits. Thor as you will see initially leaves the planet and goes back to Asgard and has to deal with the Nine Realms, and to reconnect with Jane Foster. Cap is the only one that can't go home again. His home is gone, and how he deals with the modern era will be the crux of that movie."

We also were curious about the decision to hire Shane Black, best known for his screenwriting in Hollywood, particularly the "Lethal Weapon" series, to direct Iron Man 3, considering the fact he only directed one previous movie, the action-comedy Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which played a part in Robert Downey Jr.'s casting as Tony Stark.

Was the experience with a writer/director like Joss Whedon on The Avengers one that got Feige thinking about working with more hyphenated filmmakers?

Feige replied, "I wouldn't say that was, 'Hey, Josh did a great job, let's find another writer/director.' It wasn't that. We said, 'Hey, who can bring a new spark to Tony Stark?' Shane Black has been doing that his whole career, taking the tropes of whether it's a noir picture in 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,' of defining and then redefining the action genre in the '80s and '90s and redefining the buddy cop genre, obviously with 'Lethal Weapon.' That's what he's done and clearly helping to bring back Robert Downey Jr--'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang' was a big influence for us in helping make our decision to hire Robert in the first place.

"So it's incredibly exciting for us. It's been over a year now that Shane's been working on the movie with his co-writer Drew Pearce, and it's very exciting what's going to be happening to Tony Stark in about five weeks."

Look for the rest of our interview with Kevin, talking more specifically about Marvel's The Avengers, sometime in the next few weeks before it opens on May 4.

Iron Man 3 to be Co-Produced in China

by SuperHeroHype

April 16, 2012

Disney, Marvel Studios and DMG Entertainment announced today that Iron Man 3 will be co-produced in China. Filming in China will take place in late summer. Here's the full press release:

The Walt Disney Company China, Marvel Studios and DMG Entertainment today announced the intention to co-produce IRON MAN 3 in China. Under the arrangement, DMG Entertainment will make an investment in the production of IRON MAN 3, manage the Chinese co-production process, and jointly produce the film in China. The Chinese portion of IRON MAN 3’s production will run through DMG Entertainment in coordination with Marvel Studios’ production and creative teams. DMG will also distribute IRON MAN 3 in China in collaboration with The Walt Disney Company China.

IRON MAN 3 will be the third movie in the billion-dollar plus franchise from Marvel and stars a returning cast including Robert Downey Jr. (as billionaire inventor Tony Stark) Gwyneth Paltrow (as Pepper Potts) and Don Cheadle (as James “Rhodey” Rhodes). IRON MAN 3 is produced by Kevin Feige and executive produced by Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Louis D’Esposito, Charles Newirth, Victoria Alonso, Stephen Broussard and Dan Mintz. The film is being directed by Shane Black who is working on the script with Drew Pearce. The film releases in the United States on May 3, 2013, and is being distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in all territories worldwide other than in China (which is being distributed by DMG Entertainment) and Germany/Austria (which is being distributed by the Tele München Group).

“The popularity of the Marvel franchise globally creates a huge opportunity to deliver fans yet another action packed film,” said Stanley Cheung, Managing Director, The Walt Disney Company, Greater China. “The co-production of IRON MAN 3 in China is testimony to the importance of this audience to Disney and the local industry capability to deliver a blockbuster title,” he added.

“We look forward to working alongside DMG to bring IRON MAN to the Chinese marketplace in a significant way. We are confident that Marvel’s stories will continue to be enjoyed by Chinese audiences, and adding a local flavor, and working with our new local partner, will enhance the appeal and relevance of our characters in China’s fast-growing film marketplace” said Rob Steffens, General Manager of Operations and Finance for Marvel Studios.

“Our collaboration with Disney and Marvel marks a milestone in the global entertainment landscape, as this signifies the first multi-billion dollar franchise to be produced between Hollywood and China,” said Dan Mintz, CEO of DMG Entertainment. “The IRON MAN franchise has been a major success worldwide, and we look forward to pushing the series to new heights with IRON MAN 3. The movie will further build upon its compelling storyline, and feature the hottest A-list stars, and spectacular action, which will resonate well both globally and in China, the second largest box office market in the world.”

The first installment of IRON MAN lifted off with high-speed, high-flying action when jet-setting industrialist Tony Stark survives an unexpected attack and escapes by building a high-tech robotic suit of armor. When he uncovers a nefarious plot with global implications, he dons his powerful armor and vows to protect the world as Iron Man. Straight from the pages of the legendary comic book, Iron Man is a hero who is built—not born—to be unlike any other and made US$581 million at the global box office when released in 2008. Based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero, IRON MAN 2 continued the story of the 2008 summer box office blockbuster IRON MAN, and made US$624 million at the global box office when released in 2010 Now, IRON MAN 3 continues the story with a new chapter that will deliver more heart-pounding action than ever before. Marvel Studios’ IRON MAN 3 will find Tony Stark with his back against the wall, facing his most fearsome foes yet.

Shooting is expected to commence in May in the United States and begin location filming in China in late summer 2012.

The Avengers Tracking to Open with More Than $150M

by SuperHeroHype

April 16, 2012

The Hollywood Reporter says that pre-release tracking for Marvel's The Avengers indicates that the Joss Whedon action adventure could score one of the biggest domestic openings of all time the weekend of May 4. According to the site, the film is tracking better than The Dark Knight and The Hunger Games. Here's a clip from the article:

In July 2008, The Dark Knight bowed to $158.4 million to become the top opener of all time at the domestic box office (it had the advantage of opening in the heart of summer). The pic held the record until fellow Warner Bros. title Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 debuted to nearly $170 million in July 2011.

Avengers also is tracking better than Lionsgate's blockbuster The Hunger Games, which posted a record March bow of $152.5 million to score the third-best opening of all time behind Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Dark Knight, respectively.

According to first tracking, unaided awareness in Avengers is 13 percent, compared with 10 percent for Dark Knight and 11 percent for Hunger Games; first choice is 23 percent, tying with Hunger Games and higher than the 19 percent for Dark Knight.

Total awareness is 85 percent, compared with 76 percent for Dark Knight and 74 percent for Hunger Games; definite interest is 61 percent, versus 62 percent for Dark Knight and 54 percent for Hunger Games.

Marvel's The Avengers will start opening internationally on April 25.

by SuperHeroHype

April 17, 2012

Scooper 'Sean' alerted us that ABC aired this funny new commercial for Marvel's The Avengers featuring Robert Downey Jr and Nathan Fillion from "Castle" last night. Fillion, of course, has been rumored for the role of Ant-Man for many years, but nothing has come of that.

^Hopefully they'll pick this Hank Pym thread up with Fillion. If they're not gonna do a live action GA Vigilante movie or show with him. He's already done the voice, but could carry off live action Greg.
