Cap saying "Hulk!...Smash!" was pretty cool!

The Hulk was arguably the weakest of all the pre-avengers flicks, but I have a feeling he might steal the show..

Yeah...I may have said it elsewhere (so if I'm repeating myself -- I apologize), but I find it interesting that a lot of the ads and focus has been on the Hulk, when the Hulk film performed the weakest of all the pre-Avengers building block movies.

Then again, it's the role that has been recast -- so that does make him more intriguing than the others as individuals.

I suspect Whedon had fun doing the Hulk-related dialogue.  Plus a guy with the chops of Ruffalo -- odds are I'll like this Hulk the best of the past few...

Plus the brute enforcer is usually an audience pleaser... kind of like Gimli in the LOTR movies.

A Close Up Look at Loki's Army in Toy Form From Marvel's The Avengers

by SuperHeroHype

April 10, 2012

There's been a lot of speculation as to what alien race or races make up Loki's army in the upcoming Marvel's The Avengers. Offering further fuel for the discussion is a series of close-up images of the toy versions of the otherworldly invaders, courtesy of Action Figure Insider.

The below photos arrive from one of their readers, Martin (aka Martymar160), and were taken at the Toys R Us in Times Square where an elaborate diorama has been constructed to promote the May 4th film.

Written and directed by Joss Whedon, the ensemble stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård and Samuel L. Jackson.

Marvel's The Avengers is the superhero team up of a lifetime. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as SHIELD, finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

From IGN:

Captain America 2 Director Talk

F. Gary Gray drops out of the running.

April 10, 2012

The gears are starting to move on Captain America 2. First we got word last week that the sequel has a release date of April 4, 2014. And now today the list of potential directors has gotten a bit smaller.

F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job, Law Abiding Citizen) had been one of those contenders, but he's reportedly removed himself from the running in favor of the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton.

So who does that leave? Deadline reports that while Community's Joe and Anthony Russo and The Adjustment Bureau's George Nolfi -- revealed last month to be on Marvel's "short list" -- are still possibilities, "Marvel is talking to others" too.

The site also adds that Cap 2's story picks up after The Avengers, which would make sense and be in keeping with the modern-day plot announced last week.

From IGN:

Buffy vs. Black Widow

Joss Whedon describes who would win in a fight.

April 10, 2012

It's no secret that Joss Whedon likes his hot chicks to be of the "ass kicking" variety in his projects. From River Tam in Firefly to Echo in Dollhouse, the evidence has been in plain sight for years.

But in a recent interview with PopCandy, the Avengers helmer was asked the question we dare only dream about: Who would win in a fight, Buffy Summers or Black Widow? Perhaps to no one's surprise, Whedon described the scene in vivid detail:

"Buffy would go easy at first, but as soon as Natasha popped her with a Widow Sting, she'd start bringing some slayer brawn to the fray. Natasha's fast, but a couple of good connects and she's wobbling, possibly something broken -- she whips out her glock and now Buffy's dodging -- right where Natasha wants her."

It goes on like this for a few more lines -- an avalanche of tumbling barrels gets involved -- until Whedon reaches the epic conclusion:

"Natasha, struggling to stay conscious, says the fight's over. Buffy agrees, but Natasha explains: She poisoned Buffy hours ago. That waitress that brought her salad...? Natasha smiles. The poison is dormant -- 'til it's activated by adrenaline. Buffy's eyes narrow. 'Too bad I didn't use any.' Wham! Natasha's out for the count, and Buffy's heading -- slowly -- to Willow for a mystical cleanse."

Sound about right?

Picked up another ticket yesterday for my son. We'll take him out of school on Thursday. He's already off Friday--it's Oaks Day (the day before Derby and a race day nominally for the locals) so they won't be doing anything anyway.

The Farmers Insurance Avengers Tie-In Ad

by SuperHeroHype

April 11, 2012

Farmers Insurance has launched its campaign for Marvel's The Avengers to promote its partnership with the highly anticipated summer blockbuster set to premiere on May 4, 2012. Developed by advertising agency RPA, the campaign features actor J.K. Simmons as the illustrious Professor Nathaniel Burke, with his usual six sidekick agents dressed up in homemade Marvel's The Avengers costumes touting, "We're the superheroes of insurance!"

"Being associated with the much-anticipated 'Marvel's The Avengers' gives Farmers advertising super-powers," said John Ingersoll, vice president, advertising of Farmers Group, Inc. "This opportunity lets us have some Super Hero fun with our established University of Farmers characters and shine some Hollywood limelight on our brand."

In the TV spot, "Suit Up" (watch below) directed by Roman Coppola, Professor Burke and the agents explore the similarities between being a Super Hero and being a super agent. The spot continues with a lighthearted exchange between Professor Burke and his agents, dressed in do-it-yourself costumes representing each of Marvel's The Avengers characters: The Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Black Widow and Hawkeye. A print ad by Marvel Custom Solutions recreates the TV spot in comic book form and will run in select Marvel comic books in May and June.

"'Suit Up' marks the 20th spot in a campaign that has been very fun to develop. Every agent that steps onto the University of Farmers campus comes away with a ridiculous amount of insurance knowledge, so it's only natural to see our agents turn to super agents at this stage in the game," said Tom Hamling, creative director at RPA.

Below, you can also check out a 2-minute 30-second behind-the-scenes video.
