"If this pans out, Marvel Studios has made yet another kick-ass decision as they cast out the Marvel Universe, and I can't wait to see what the roster for "The Avengers" is going to look like.

Empire Magazine was interviewing Jeremy Renner about "The Hurt Locker," and it's obvious that no matter what the film does in terms of Oscars, it's given Renner a huge bounce in the industry, and he's going to start showing up in all sorts of interesting places soon, I'd expect.

Here's what he had to say, though, that got nerds everywhere buzzing this week:

"If I was a betting man, I would bet that Hawkeye would probably show up in 'Thor', and then be in 'The Avengers.' But do I know for sure? I can’t say. But I’d love for that to happen. It’d be fun.”

Even more interesting?  Renner was one of the guys who just spent the last three months chasing the lead role in George Miller's new "Mad Max: Fury Road," only to lose out to Tom Hardy, who is coming off of the ferocious "Bronson."  I know Sam Worthington was also in that hunt, so it's interesting to see how there's a new group of guys all chasing the same parts who qualify by virtue of being men in an industry of perpetual boys.

Hawkeye is Marvel's answer to Green Arrow, a can't-miss archer who has been a major player in "Avengers" continuity over the years.  I love the idea of just threading him into other movies instead of trying to build a franchise around him by himself, and Renner's a heck of a pick for the role.

Will it happen?  We won't know for a while, but already, 2012 is looking like a ridiculous amount of fun with the arrival of what may well be the biggest superhero film ever made, and it just keeps getting cooler with each new bit of news"

Joss Whedon to Direct The Avengers

Source: superherohype.com

April 13, 2010

Deadline New York reports that Marvel Studios is moving ahead with Joss Whedon as director of The Avengers. The site says he is now in final negotiations to helm the action adventure scheduled for a May 4, 2012 release.

The film would feature many of the lead actors involved in Marvel Studios adaptations right now, including Robert Downey Jr. ("Iron Man" films), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and more.

Paramount Pictures will distribute the film.

Whedon's credits include "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Firefly," "Angel," Serenity, "Dollhouse" and upcoming The Cabin in the Woods.

Nope, this will be the start.  As I said elsewhere, I think Whedon will do a great job, but he'll make us care about somebody and kill them unexpectedly.

God Almighty, I hope not.

THIS ... is the movie I've waited all my life for:

And this is the other movie I've waited all my life for:

Hopefully, one of these days real soon, we can start a JLA movie thread.  And, dare I say it, a JSA movie thread. But right now, Marvel's ahead of the game.

Mike
(So, we know Cap, Iron Man, Thor, Nick Fury and possibly the Black Widow will be in the film.  There's a rumor that Olivia Munn will cameo as the Scarlet Witch in Iron Man 2 and then segue into Avengers.  Who else?  Ed Norton as Bruce Banner?  William Hurt as General Thaddeus E. "Thunderbolt" Ross?  Who else?  Ant-Man or Giant-Man?  Who should play the Wasp?  What about other Avengers? Vision?  Hawkeye?  Black Panther?  Falcon?  Quicksilver?  What about the villains? Loki?  Red Skull?  The Masters of Evil?  Should there be an Invaders flashback?  God, I can't wait for this movie to come out.  I'm in total geek mode right now.)  Wink

Completely agree.  But my limited understanding of Marvel's movie making philosophy was roughly to follow the Ultimate Comic line.  I hope I'm wrong.

Fuck.  Now that Whedon's involved -- I have to root for this movie to be good after all.  Damn it.

From IGN:

Avengers vs. Aliens?

Sources claim to know who Marvel's heroes will battle on the big screen.

May 20, 2010

by Phil Pirrello

Close Enconters of the Skrull Kind? Okay, now that we got that pun out of the way, the internet's neverending rumor factory thinks Joss Whedon's Avengers will battle an alien threat straight from the comic books.

The Skrulls, a race of very green humanoid aliens that can change their shape/appearance at wiil, will duke it out with Cap and Iron in The Avengers, according to ComicBookMovie.com.

CMB claims that sources "close to the production" believe that "The Skrulls will 'brainwash' and use the Hulk", similar to how Loki wielded the Green Guy in the comics. The sources go on to say that fans should not expect a full on invasion, a la Marvel's Secret Invasion - the Skrulls will operate more in a puppet master capacity, saving their big bad attack for a sequel.

But wait, there's more! Should this rumor pan out, the Skrulls won't be the only alien race joining the Avengers on the big screen. Their enemy, the Kree, may surface as earth's allies. *Mind = blown*

So this rumor is all sorts of interesting on many levels. If it is true, than it implies that The Avengers will be the most "comic-y" of the Marvel films, incorporating a storyline that bucks the grounded realism found in most of Marvel's movies.

With actor Kevin Pennington rumored to be in the running to play the Kree alien Noh-Varr in the movie, the Skrulls' role in Whedon's film inches closer to being a reality.

Currently, the Buffy creator is re-writing Zak Penn's original script and gearing up for a May 4, 2012 release date. And yes, we'll keep ya posted on further Avengers goodness.

All Those Memories Will Be Lost Like Tears In Rain

The Skrull angle sounds interesting but what worries me is they have to tiie-in the Cap storyline as well from The First Avenger and they'll run out of time or somme things will get too dumbed down. Last I'd heard (and this could be entirely arbitray by now) was that the Cap movie would be about his days in WWII and at the end he'd get frozen in the block of ice and later found by the Avengers in the team film.

Regardless if Whedon's on board then this is bound to be good on some level.  He's ggreat at balancing multiple characters and I have to admit my anticipation for the first Superhero team feature is growing more with every film Marvel Studios puts out.

sounds like too much for a first movie, down the road in a sequel sure,i loved the kree skrull war in the 70's but having cap adjust to a brave new world plus aliens eh..just make the hulk go on a rampage on his own maybe make him the grey hulk in this.

Whedon, hmm?  Wasn't he the one in talks a few years back to help the Wonder Woman flick, and made it clear that, in HIS movie, Wonder Woman would NOT be wearing star-spangled panties?

Yep.

This flick'll be a real winner.
