The Avengers Climbs to 9th on the All-Time Global List

by SuperHeroHype

May 16, 2012

Walt Disney Pictures reported today that Marvel's The Avengers has climbed to the 9th spot on the all-time worldwide box office list, surpassing the studio's own Alice in Wonderland ($1,024.3 million) and Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace ($1,027.0 million). The film has grossed $1,036.2 million worldwide.

"The Avengers" also became the highest domestic grossing film of 2012 passing The Hunger Games in just 12 days of release and is the 13th highest grossing domestic release of all-time.

On Tuesday, the Joss Whedon action adventure added $11.7 million internationally and $8.5 million domestically for a total of $20.2 million. The international gross to date is $646.8 million and domestic gross has reached $389.5 million.

The movie should easily pass up the next three films on the all-time global list which are all three Disney films - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($1,043.9 million), Toy Story 3 ($1,063.2 million) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1,066.2 million).

This is why I love America and hate the victim mentality so many of my fellow citizens have.

From a literal crackhead to the biggest movie star in the world.

Good for you Robert.

No doubt. I don't know why more crack heads don't just become fabulously wealthy movie stars.

Ben Kingsley as Roxxan Oil head Aleksander Lukin makes much more sense than him as Mandarin.  And makes that Red Skull/Cosmic Cube tie-in.

Cap's killed quite a few mooks in the Brubaker run. I remember very well the Baron Blood story, it was the Byrne run. If I recall that bit correctly, it troubled Cap particularly because he hadn't had to kill anyone since he got unfrozen.

That bit where Colossus offed the guy during the mutant massacre storyline was a major HOLY SHIT. I loved that. I read an interview once with Claremont where he talked about how he intentionally moved Nightcrawler and Kitty out of the team just before, since he was taking the gang into some dark-ass places and didn't want those two to get soiled as characters.

There was a very good issue of Luke Cage where some idiot villain managed to fall from a great height. When Cage came up to try to save him, he gave Luke the "fuck you, this is your fault" routine. They showed him sitting up and ruminating about it all night, but the next day he told his woman "I've had my time with it, now it's behind me."

These and and the Captain Britain one are my favorites. Plus one more:

JLA, The Nail. Elseworlds thing by, surely not coincidentally, Alan Davis. Batman kills the Joker.

I don't suppose that I hold it against Superman and Batman as characters so much as I do the editorial mandate that's in place. I feel that it insults the intelligence of us as readers.

As someone said, it's too bad DC hasn't come up with a single villain as good as the Joker since Jerry Robinson did in 1940. If they had, maybe he wouldn't be unkillable. Really, it's like Batman being given the opportunity to kill Osama Bin Laden or Josef Mengele--personal codes aside, some people need killing. It's the dichotomy of comics: we know what needs to happen, but the hero can't or won't kill. Yet, as long as the villain is in play, he will return. Batman could design an inescapable cell, but then what's the point? Readers would bitch and moan that the Joker is around to create mayhem. The Joker, can't live with him, can't shove a grenade up his ass.

Harley Quinn is great character and I'm happy to have her in the comics, even if she has rarely been used as effectively as she was in her native medium. She provides the opportunity for a fun story: Incapacitate the Joker, maybe take the plunge and kill him. Harley undergoes surgery etc. to take his place, maybe even gender reassignment because the world needs a Joker. Best of both worlds: Joker is still around, maybe even crazier than before, but the original mass murderer is gone.

Good idea, or nu 52?

I was always a fan of Joker's Daughter, though the convoluted way we got there--Duela Dent, actually Two-Face's daughter? And she becomes who? Harlequin? Still, I loved those old Teen Titans issues. I'd like to see a story that won't happen now, since the DCnU is only a few years old: a real Joker's daughter, a child raised in isolation, the result of Joker getting a victim pregnant and killing her after the child was born just to have a child to raise to his desires. He instills an overwhelming hatred of Batman and all his allies and general hatred of people in general, including himself. The only kindness the child receives is from Joker's flunkies when he's incarcerated. Whenever he's released and learns of these transgressions, the offenders are killed in front of the child. She becomes more unbalanced and sociopathic than her father. She'd make a great partner for Bane, though.

I agree -- it is funny -- funny that it would/will actually take a super-team of Marvel's heaviest hitters to take down one lone Batman.  Fuck, I can't STOP laughing right now.  laugh
