After months (years?) of looking at other people's custom work and wishing my shelf looked like jackknight92's I thought I'd take the plunge and create my own. I started with two speedsters whom I thought would be a relatively good beginner's project. These two aren't totally original by any means--inspiration comes from the very clean work of talonsoulbender, who really motivated me with his versions:
Johnny Quick - used a SA Aquaman with some added Milliput to flesh out the gloves, boots, and chest.
Prof. Zoom is a straight re-paint of SA Flash. Why hasn't this one been done yet by DCD?
Interesting that the original SA Flash figure is a little small even by early DCD standards.
Zoom joins the other Rogues.
Johnny and the Speedsters.
Other Golden Agers welcome Mr. Chambers.
What do you guys think?

In all honesty, those might be the best "first" customs I've ever seen. Magnificent job on the paint...you've avoided almost every pitfall that plagues the neophyte with paint. These are just fantastic...really. Job well done sir. If this is how you start off, I can't wait to see what you do when you have a couple under your belt.

Thanks, measle!
I'm really just standing on the shoulders of giants, though-- I did a lot of looking at other people's stuff and reading about technique online before attempting these. And I sure learned shitloads actually doing the work. Hope to get better!

Those did come out wonderfully for your first customs. Some very clean work, great job!

Very, very nice work!
I love that Johnny Quick.
But don't let Sin and Jack think they are all that good. Guys got big heads already.

Outstanding! Amazing how much out of place smiling Aquaman is and how Barry's face looks evil as Zoom.
Now, get to work on Georg!

Yeah, I noticed that-- no one else looks too happy to see Johnny.
Thanks for all the compliments, guys.

Rod, if you want to do a quick write up, maybe a recipe and some thoughts, I'd be happy to feature these on the CriticalMess site. I like having them there, it's a more permanant showing than a messageboard. The site is for the whole community to use, so anyone that wants to exhibit their work there is welcome to do so.

WOW
Your paint work on those two looks awesome! Very smooth and clean, looks like you're up there with top customizers right out of the gate.
Is the yellow hand painted or spayed? It's SOOOOOOO hard to get yellow any where near that crisp by hand painting.
And I have to give you even bigger props for you great clear photo taking. That's something that plagues most of us customizers and your beyond that with your first showcase.
What's next? Libby or Jesse Quick maybe? Boomerang, Heatwave, Piper?

I have to agree. Those both look amazing. Your painting is really top notch.
On a side note. What type of camera/setting do you use? I think I'm in Urb's group of unclear photo taking.

Guys get a tripod! My picture taking has improved very much with a tripod to steady the camera. Just check out the picture of Jack's custom JLU Spectre.

One thing that helps too is to get 4-6 feet away and then use zoom as opposed to shooting the pics from close up. I get pretty decent action figure shots this way.

These are your firsts? Outstanding!! Zoom was my first custom as well, just because I did'nt know crap about sculpting then. Fantastic work with the yellow, I know how much of a bitch that color is! And thanks for the shout out, time to start a gallery over at the Doosh if it ever gets back online! Very nice, keep it up brother!
