Yup. Actually, it deepens my appreciation for the books quite a bit, especially the God Emporer ones.
Speaking of, have you read of the sequels to the original series, or any of the prequels?

I hopped off the Golden Path before it left Munchkinland, so most of the details in the Wiki piece are from books that I didn't read. Some of the bits sound interesting, mutations and adaptable spice worms and the like, but I still think I've read enough Dune to suit me. One of these days I'll have to look for that Dune flick with Kyle McLachlan, and Sting wearing an itty bitty codpiece. Probably not faithful to the book, but certainly picturesque.

I think the film in it's day was more popular for Sting than it was for the story. It deviates from the book quite a bit, and the casting for the most part was really hit and miss. MacLaughlin was great for Paul, but the guys they got to play Thufir and Dunkin were awful. The story is a pretty good (abridged) adaptation, but there were some key elements that were changed that should have just been dropped altogether. If you can't explain the weirding ways to the audience then just leave it out...those weirding modules were just absurd. Plus the Hollywood ending is really cliched and out of sorts with the story.
If you're a diehard fan of the books you'd probably hate it more often than not. I saw the movie before I read the books so I was able to accept it for what it was. The Sci Fi miniseries was a better adpatation, but it too suffered from questionable casting, spotty acting and amateurish effects.

I thrive on lousy film adaptations, provided they're not of books I'm very fond of. And even some I AM very fond of, like the Bakshi animated LOTR. Which reminds me, I've got to watch that Vampirella dvd I bought from a cut-out bin...

I've read both "Heritics and Chapterhouse", but it's been so long ago that I barely remember most of the details. Haven't checked out and prolly won't the prequils or sequils written by his son based on his notes. I've learned to hide it well, but I really am an old school Sci-Fi/fantasy snob who rarely enjoys books "based on" the work of someone I respect.
Visually I thought the 1984 movie was better than the Sci-Fi channel mini-series and it didn't have anything to do with Sting's skinny ass wearing a cod piece.
However the Sci-Fi mini series is more true to the source and well worth watching IF you ever get the chance.

I will give the Lynch film that. The production design was great and really fit with the material.
Joe, since you're not a fan of the books, or at least a big fan, you'd probably get more enjoyment from the movie.

The problem with both adaptations is the story is so complex that it doesn't "dumb down" well enough to easily translate into film. The Sci-Fil channel mini series came about as close as I think anyone's going to come to doing it well and like Mease said, it still had some blatent flaws.

Not to change the subject, but you must have absolutely loved "Eragon" then.

By all means, change the subject. This started out as a review of Harry Potter.

We prefer to call him Phillip K. Penis.
Seriously though, he's awesome. I thought Blade Runner was a cool story, until I read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.
Of the old school "make you think" sci fi writers, also love Heinlein, and Arthur C. Clarke. 2001 was an amazing book. I thought that book almost as unfilmable as LOTR. And in a way it was, because the whole premise of the story was changed for the movie.

As much as I enjoyed "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep"...Tanith Lee's "The Silver Metal Lover" is my all time favorite 'bot story. As far as old school Sci-Fi writers go....Heinlein has always been the one who's work I enjoy the most. Especially "Time enough for Love" and the excerpts from the "Notebooks of Lazarus Long".

Did you read Analog magazine back in the day? That always seemed to have one or two really good short stories in each issue. Even sci-fi television was a lot more intelligent back then. Shows like The Twilight Zone, Star Trek TOS, were designed to engage the viewer, to challenge you to think outside your beliefs and ask questions.
