DC is built on Legacies.

Just about every major character in the DCU has at some time been succeeded by a new Hero (and in some cases villain) with an old persona.

Some by tragedy, some by retirement, some by the respect of others...and some by family.

Ollie Queen was a character who has been beset by change in his 70! odd years as a character.

Created by Mort Weisinger and George Papp, he first appeared in More Fun Comics #73 in November 1941 and was based around the idea of the great British hero Robin Hood.

Ollie originally started off as a Batman style knock-off, with all the trappings of his more famous inspiration.

Time though saw the character grow.

Come the Nineteen Seventies, writer Denny O'Neil and artist Neal Adams saw the character develop a strong social conscience, a famous girlfriend in Black Canary and a take no nonsense attitude.

Along with a highly left wing political stance, the decade saw him become one of the more...promiscuous heroes in the DCU.

So it came as no surprise that after his heroic death (Green Arrow V1 #100–101), it came to pass that we met Ollie's illegitimate son.

Connor Hawke was a product of his times, created by Kelley Puckett and Jim Aparo (Green Arrow V2 #0), Hawke was a master martial artist with a sensitive bent.

After leaving the Ashram where he grew up, Connor set out in the world to live up to his father's Legacy.

Given one of his father's old bows by Dinah Lance (Black Canary II), Connor met and befriended many heroes of the DCU, most who were busy living up to their own mentors.

Although Connor never really took off as well as some of his other peers, he was still able to prove himself adequately and earned his place in the pantheon of DCU legends.

A short term member of the JLA of the time, Connor overcame his fears to earn the respect of the elder Heroes of the DCU, where he continued to live up to his identity until his father's resurrection in the "Quiver" storyline.

Notable appearances:

Green Arrow V2 #114 (Final Night Tie-in)
Green Arrow V2 #130 (Green Arrow/Green Lantern/Flash Team-up)
JLA #8-9 (Against the Key)
Connor Hawke: Dragon's Blood (Mini-series)

That issue with Connor vs. the revamped and creepy Key is far and away his best solo issue.

Morrison truly embraced the next generation of heroes in JLA, Wally, Kyle, and Connor...

The mainstream DCU titles were much maligned in the 90s... Batman's back was broken, Superman died, Green Lantern turned evil, the Corps was no more...

But because these titles didn't have the depth and substance of critical darlings like Sandman, Animal Man, the Doom Patrol, Swamp Thing, Hellblazer, Preacher, etc... They were easily dismissed.

And honestly, in their 90s experimentation-- DC did miss quite a few times...Only the hardiest of Dr. Fate fans can claim that tattoo-eyed FATE was a great read or a great character... Or that Gunfire or any of the uninspired morts that emerged from the ill-fated Bloodlines mini-series, save for Hitman-- were worth the paper they were printed on.

But in the Silver Age, there was new Flashes, Green Lanterns, Atoms, and Hawkmen.  Snapper Carr betrayed the JLA.  The Doom Patrol was blown to smithereens.  In many ways, the 90s were truer to the spirit of the DC Silver Age, with a little Marvel angst thrown in, with these new heroes struggling with whether they "measured up" to the amazing generation that preceded them, than any era since.

And given what's happened to Oliver Queen in Identity Crisis and now the rebooted dork in the nu 52, maybe he SHOULD have stayed dead.

That's the conundrum of Connor and Kyle-- fans definitely wanted Hal and Ollie around, but really, like the Highlander, there can be only one.

But yeah, Connor deserves a figure, no doubt. A good Green Arrow is hard to find.

Reading the DCnU is like trying to shit a brick.  It's agonizing.  While I'm one of the few people around here who thought there might be some actual merit in a relaunch, the execution has been just that, an execution.

Red Arrow blows.  He's a much duller Speedy.  And an Alex Ross reacharound, always a bad thing in principle.

No.

And, no other derivative "namesakes" in that style (short lived fails).

Ex: Fate w/eye tat, Firestorm/Mikhail/elemental, Bat-character du jour, etc.

They just take up slots.

Of course, IMHO.

Absolutely.

He definitely would have been a MUCH better figure than the wave 20 Green Arrow we got, who has just sat in a bin since I got him.

A much needed figure for the JLA

Wasn't a fan of Connor, but he's certainly deserving of a figure.

He deserved more than just a figure. But a figure is about all we can hope for now that he doesn't exist in comics.

Agreed. Worked great for Kingdom Come -- and should have stayed there.

That was a great JLA issue, and everything Chuck Dixon did with him was gold. It was like a drink from a mountain stream, a completely different feel from so much that was going on around the book at the time.

Connor is a great character and tht JLA was his shining "cool" moment.

I liked the idea of two GAs, perhaps Connor in JLA and Ollie in the Seven Soldiers.

Connor would be great to have. Always liked him.

Where did he end up in the comics (pre-nU)? Suddenly I can't recall.

Last thing I remember reading for Connor was late in the GA/BC run...he got spliced with Plastic Man's DNA or some such.
