Marvel and ABC Teaming on Avengers-Themed Series?

by SuperHeroHype

July 27, 2012

Deadline is reporting that Marvel's TV division is in talks with ABC and ABC Studios about developing a drama series set in the world of The Avengers.

The site says: "I hear that the connection to the Avengers franchise would be light as the project is expected to be set in the universe and feature some of its themes and feel but may not include any characters from Joss Whedon’s blockbuster. I hear the project is in a nascent stage, described as “a kernel of an idea,” with a number of scenarios explored, including a high-concept cop show."

Guillermo del Toro recently said that he was still working with ABC on a new "Hulk" series as well and that they were "waiting on a particular writer to do a rewrite on the pilot."

What do you think the possible series set in the "Avengers" world could be about?

Jasper Sitwell, Agent of SHIELD

Bobbi Morse is MOCKINGBIRD

Rage is gonna get you suckas!

(was he actually a full-fledged member? If so, this is why people (er, me) hate 90s comics so much.

He was a full-fledged member until they discovered that he was underage, at which point they kicked him out.  Then he went to the New Warriors and rocked the house.

Not just you, dude. But I would be all over your first two ideas.

I have fond memories of New Warriors, although I'd ditched it after a year or two.

I still think my idea of a Marvel Presents anthology series would be perfect. You could do it all, Punisher, Moon Knight, Mockingbird, Night Thrasher, Deathlok, Damage Control, Dr. Strange, go back in time and tell a story of Nick Fury before he lost the eye when he was younger, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Hellcat, you could really investigate the MU Cinematic Universe as a whole with it and give it more depth. Plus give characters who may not be able to carry a movie a chance to be seen.

Anthologies are a very hard sell, but I like the idea of a Marvel Team-Up. One character to anchor a different guest-star every week. That would rock! But all of the characters who could anchor are tied up. I think SHIELD is a good possibility. I'd like to see them bring in Sitwell, the Contessa, Scorpio, Madame Hydra, Dum Dum, the guy with the teeth, Mockingbird -- and maybe even Jessica Drew -- as a double agent -- eventually becoming Spider-Woman and spinning off into her own series.

So the talk is Fox is about to lose Daredevil, Disney offered a deal where Fox would get more time to make the Daredevil movie in exchange for giving the movie rights to Silver Surfer and Galactus back to Disney, different reports say different things about whether Fox is going to make the trade.

But let's say they don't make the trade. A Daredevil TV show could be perfect. Daredevil trying to take down the Kingpin, SHIELD investigating Daredevil, you can throw in different bad guys like Bullseye and the Owl, incorporate the Hand, bring in other street level Marvel guys like Punisher, Moon Knight and Shang Chi. Could be a ton of fun if done right.

It could but I think it would end up becoming Smallville with a blind dude.  They wouldn't need a huge budget for it either which is good but I still have doubts that they could do it well.

SHIELD could be great, but you'd need to get Sam Jackson in for at least a couple of cameos. SHIELD without Nick Fury just ain't SHIELD.

Avengers Initiative/Academy would play to Whedon's strengths. Large cast, young characters, plenty of room to do his own thing... plus it leaves plenty of room for the movie actors to drop in as "guest instructor" for an episode. It would be a good way to introduce the Young Avengers and the Runaways to audiences as well since they'd fit into the framework of the concept, not as regular cast, but as rivals or antagonists.

Well, looks like they may not be doing SHIELD, but using another idea I posted above. But they will probably tie the two together.

You know how you do SHIELD and get around Jackson?

Set it in 1973, with a Howard Stark and Peggy Carter, along with other of the Commandos in their 50's and 60's starting SHIELD with a young Nick Fury and others.

Elijah Kelley could probably pull off a  young Nick Fury:

I know it'll never happen, but if they set it in the 70's Marvel U, I'd rather see white Nick Fury.

Not because I'm racist, but because I just still can't see 616 Fury as Samuel L.

To me the movie verse is based in Ultimate continuity and always will be.

Now get 70's Luke Cage into the mix and we'd be talking.

I still think there should be a Shaft styled big budget Cage movie before Avengers 2, to introduce him to the roster.

They could do an Agent of SHIELD with only minimal Fury involvement. I think they'd need him to launch the series -- and only make sporadic appearances after that. SWORD is also a possibility -- especially if Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman is the main character -- and since Joss Whedon created SWORD.
