Have a point and my agreement, jmax. I have a small toy green lantern signed by Mr. Nodell. It's the power battery for some of my figures, just because.
Mr. Nodell was a great guy.
Just for the record its not just that change I'm against I'm not a fan of the redesign either, no green/red/purple...no way. There are ways to redesign using the old costume.
Here lies my Alan Scott Rest in Piece.

I could see Wildcat or Atom.
But just THINK of the fuss if there were TWO gay characters at DC!

Naw. Ted Grant will be an African American former convict who turned his life around as a UFC style fighter. He'll be a practicing Muslim who converted in prison. And he'll be married to a white woman.

Rex Tyler will be a rich, womanizing prick robber baron (a 1%er), who will end up fucking Joan (Jay's ex). He will have some contrived "come to Jesus moment" about "giving back" and "corporate responsibility" and "paying his fair share". He'll end up being Tony Stark for the team.

It's Earth-2. IMO it has just as much bearing as making Spider-Man a minority in the Ultimate World or whatever world they have him in. It doesn't mean jack.
I disagree. Ultimate Marvel is a significant portion of Marvel Comics. It's shaping the movie world. This is a alternate world that will have limited exposure in a series headed for cancellation.

Changing a character who is established is the wrong way to do this, its for press only. There are so many established strong gay characters in the DCU.
Here was my responce to people on FB saying this should have been a new character or that they should not have messed with a classic like the original GL.
"For all of you saying it should have been a new character, this IS a new character. Just because these nU characters share names with their old universe counterparts doesn't mean they're the same people. This could have been Superman pining for Jimmy rather than Lois for all I care. Its a reboot.
Alan's significance to the history of heroes on earth was obliterated, his kids, two great characters in their own right were wiped out, his ironic rig is gone, and people are worried about him being gay?
This GL ain't that GL, friends. This DC ain't that DC."
That's how I feel about it.
SBC get's it.
As for a redesign, nothing has ever needed fixed more than the horrific eye sore that was GL's color scheme. Come to think of it, dressing like that all these years we probably should have saw this coming.
Gard, that Wildcat would be awesome.

The fuss (at least for me) isn't because there is a gay character, its that he is because they feel they need one to introduce realistic diversity into the universe. You could list a bunch of gay characters in DC, thats not my issue. I don't like diversity for the sake of itself. The Justice League cartoon did this with using John instead of the more prominently known Hal, because there weren't enough minorities on the team. That doesn't sit right with me. I'm big on equality, respect and acceptance of people regardless of race, color, religion or preferences, but I don't go find a black friend just because I need one to make me diverse.
StrayCat you're wrong I think there are people who have a problem wtih him being gay, and there are people who have a problem with respecting the history of a character. I'm the latter. I liked the JSA dynamic of being a legacy group, go to people for advice. The old guard who'd been around the block. I'm not a fan of this whole Earth-2 idea not just that change. I don't feel "icky" because there's a dude kissing another. I have several family and friends of other preferences than my own, I've read books and had no issues with it in the past. I think your off base by stating the only people who have a problem with this are essentially homphobes.
I'm not going to comment any more on this issue because I feel I'm ranting and will back off until thoughts are calm cool and collect. Good Day Messers.

But Gard, some of those changes would be better than what we've gotten so far.
On a related note, I just learned that a long-time employee lost his partner but my company isn't sending because someone objected. Welcome to a company that was founded in the nineteenth century, and is still there. Pisses me off. They better never send another card around.

Sounds like your issues need to be vented in the "DC is rebooting everything thread" or even way back in the "Brave New World"/"new Aqualad" threads. This is a different guy in a different world with new stories and personality details.
Oh and John was awesome in JL/JLU! That show wouldn't have been the same without him. Icon or Black Lightning or new black guy would have seemed at least as "off" as substituting one Earth GL for another. And just ignoring diversity all together because that's bow the 60's/70's were seems more than a little wrong as well. (all IMO of course).

Yeah, you guys make some good points. Technically, this isn't the original Alan Scott anymore. No more than any other character is the original, either. This whole thing, as somebody else said (
sorry for forgetting who
), is basically ULTIMATE DC. To me, NICK FURY will forever be the 616 version, with a big fat cigar, and 5 o'clock shadow. But, there's also the ULTIMATE Sam Jackson version. It's now the same with DC.
But at this point, I don't think there's anything DC could possibly do that would bring me back. And that's OK. Everything they have done since announcing the Nu 52 has driven me
even further
into the arms of the past. But again, that's clearly my issue. If I'm not the target demographic, I'm ok with that. I'm not happy about it, but I can accept it.

Send a card from the people who do care. It needn't be from the company. But from all the other people with some human compassion.

Yeah, but it's really alienating to know there are people that close around you that don't respect you. . .especially when it's still easy to get fired for being gay. . .and at such a sad time.
Sorta back on topic, it REALLY helps to see positive gay stuff happening in the main stream like both major comics publishers having positive gay influence in the same month.

You are correct, that my quam stems much deeper than just this issue. I know its not the same guy as the old Alan, but to me its still the same character with a change that I'm not happy about. You are correct John was great in JL.JLU and it wouldn't have been the same. I don't argue that, I just have issues with forcing things to fit into diversity. I don't say ignore diversity, because thats the way things were. But don't force the issue where it needn't be forced. I don't see many Jews in comics, how bout Eskimos, African Tribesmen/women...hmmm Why choose a social hot button if not for the piont of having people talk.
If you're not doing it for the press/shock value...do it without announcements and press releases and let there be discussion afterwards.
Sorry, just placing my opinion out there. Which All here cept Gard(jk) have very good points and arguments both ways. Thank you respecting others opinions that is very important to me and in civilized conversation.
