Batman megawriter (Batman, Batman & Robin, Batman Inc., I could go on…) Grant Morrison spills the beans on what makes Batman tick to Playboy (with incredible art from Frank Quitely, FYI). The secret? “Batman is very, very gay.”

grant morrison tells playboy gayness built into batman, grant morrison playboy batman is very very gay, grant morrison playboy, batman is very gay playboy

“I got interested in the class element of Batman: He’s a rich man who beats up poor people. It’s quite a bizarre mission to go out at night dressed as a bat and punch the hell out of junkies. And then he goes home and lives in this mansion. There’s an aspirational quality to him—he’s an outlaw and he can buy anything. He has a new Batmobile every movie. He’s very plutonian in the sense that he’s wealthy and also in the sense that he’s sexually deviant.

Gayness is built into Batman. I’m not using gay in the pejorative sense, but Batman is very, very gay. There’s just no denying it. Obviously as a fictional character he’s intended to be heterosexual, but the basis of the whole concept is utterly gay. I think that’s why people like it. All these women fancy him and they all wear fetish clothes and jump around rooftops to get to him. He doesn’t care—he’s more interested in hanging out with the old guy and the kid.”

Real talk, Grant Morrison is a personal hero and I gobble up almost everything he produces. I can’t imagine that DC is pleased that Playboy is running an interview calling their biggest moneymaker “very, very gay” right before The Dark Knight Rises heads to theaters, but I imagine there’s not much they can do to chastise the most talented and popular writer in their entire company.

So what do YOU think? Is Batman inherently gay? Is it built into his mythos?

Eh. He's a comic book character. When comic book characters start acting like real people (which I guess is what some people like), I'm out.

I'm loosing any respect I've had in the past for the DC administration.  Grant Morrison needs to STFU.

I was thinking the same thing.  I think he wants to get fired.  I know he was pretty pissed about DCNu, and maybe they haven't delivered on their promises to make it up to him.

It's more the comment about wanting to hang out with the kid and the old man that I don't like. It's creepy and makes me think it points to some multi generational molestation situation.

It's as pointless as the talk about living in a mansion and beating up junkies though. It all sounds like something he thought of while tripping his balls off and would probably blow my mind of I was blitzed on shrooms.

In a rational state of mind, I am just thankful for editors and his ability to tell a fun story with classic characters.

He's done with Batman anyway.  New arc starts up next month and it's over in 2013.  The last 12 parter and Grant has said his peace on Batman.

I bet he had to start over on Multiversity.  At least some of the details if not the whole story.

Don't forget that he's headed to Image soon rather than Vertigo.

Having said which that text is old news.
I've seen him say the same thing a few years back when Batman Inc started.

So long as he doesn't head to Marvel. I don't want to have to take LSD just to understand my new issue of Thor.

I doubt he'll ever go back to Marvel, not with the way things went down with Joey Q and him.

It's sad, some guys just work with a certain company and Morrison has just always been DC to me, just as Bendis is to Marvel.

I don't really think any of this is a big deal. Who gives a shit? But then again, I'm not reading anything by Morrison at the moment, and I'm down to only 2 DC titles now. Whatevs. You wouldn't/shouldn't let your children read Morrison anyway.

He's drawing a fine line referring to the gay overtone to the concept versus the heterosexuality of the character.  I actually agree with him.

He dresses little boys up in green thongs and slippers, and has them jumping rooftops with him at three in the morning. Then takes them home and introduces them to everyone as his "wards". Of COURSE Batman is gay. Morrison is just stating what we all have known all along.

*Pretty* sure Batman shouldn't necessitate the scrutiny.

The older I get, the dumber this kind of shit is. To think, I was looking forward to this. He's embarrassed me and he's embarrassed himself.

Considering he could have taken the opportunity of a Playboy interview to build up any number of comic-related concepts, to tell what is, by definition, an aggressively hetero audience that Batman is gay in concept is a mistake, especially with TDKR about to open and, for that matter, the aggressively masculine Avengers. (Take a look at Renner, Emsworth, Evans and the Hulk (and Scarlett) and tell me Avengers isn't a boys' club movie.) He could have talked about his stellar run on Batman, making sense out of the silliness of past stories (while avoiding geekspeak like Silver Age). He could have talked about Final Crisis, about to be released in an Absolute. Instead, he harpoons the golden goose. Not a smart move for a smart guy.
