Guillermo del Toro on the Monstrous Scale of
Pacific Rim
Source:
ComingSoon
June 8, 2012
Production still underway on his
Pacific Rim
, Guillermo del Toro spoke with
Total Film
about the enormous scale of his Kaiju epic.
"When we’re talking about the physicality of the fight,"
he said,
"we ended up building several blocks of Hong Kong. And literally demolished them. We built a building and then we took down the buildings. We built command centres of the robots that were the size of the house. We started them on hydraulic rigs that shoot and elevated them and moved them round so you could really get a sense of the physical nature driving a robot like this."
The film, set for release on July 12, 2013,
Pacific Rim
is officially described as follows:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

June 8, 2012
Warner Bros. has plans to develop

, an action adventure project based in Chinese mythology,
Deadline
reports. The idea began with producer Jason Reed and the film has now entered the scripting stage with Chad St. John taking on writing duties.
Details are few on the plot of

. Also set up at Warner Bros., that film will be directed by Albert Hughes with Gerard Butler, Amber Heard and Gary Oldman attached to star.

Universal Moving Forward with a
Snow White and the Huntsman Sequel
Source:
ComingSoon
June 8, 2012
It was reported
back in April
that Universal Pictures was keen to move forward with a big screen followup to their
Snow White and the Huntsman
and brought David Koepp aboard to begin drafting a sequel even before the Rupert Sanders fairytale epic hit theaters. Now,
Deadline
reports that their faith was not misplaced and, thanks to a $56 million opening weekend, a sequel is moving forward with Sanders sought to return.
The first film, now in theaters, stars Kristen Stewart (
The Twilight Saga
) as the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Charlize Theron) who is out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with Chris Hemsworth's huntsman, who was dispatched to kill her.
Previous reports
hinted that a big screen followup could focus primarily on the huntsman.

Venom
Movie May Tie Into
The Amazing Spider-Man
by
SuperHeroHype
June 09, 2012
Earlier today, Matt Patches over at
Hollywood.com
had a chance to talk with
The Amazing Spider-Man
producers Avi Arad and Matthew Tolmach, and during the inteview, he took the opportunity to ask them about Sony's planned
Venom
movie, which
Chronicle
director Josh Trank is
rumored to be directing
.
With the success of
The Avengers
, it makes perfect sense for Sony to want the part of the Marvel Universe they acquired during the '90s to work together as a whole, so one can expect that they'll take a similar real-life science approach with Venom's origin story as they do with Spider-Man and The Lizard in the upcoming reboot.
Arad explained the bigger picture plans for the
Venom
movie:
"It's an Eddie Brock story. We want to be as close to the comics as possible. Especially in Eddie Brock's story. But again, pseudo-science is becoming science. All these tidbits about webs, artificial webs, is a huge industry now. Spiderwebs have unique qualities that will be huge for communications, fibers, and so forth. So we have taken the approach that we want to make the huge amazing movie about Eddie."
"He was a journalist. He had the wrong story, he got in trouble for it, he got fired,"
Tolmach continued, going on to explain how they're approaching characters like Venom.
"The whole essence to us for the Marvel characters is stay close to the bible, stay close to the emotional story, and the rest is fun. Look for the worlds to make sense with one another."
"Hopefully, all these worlds will live together in peace someday,"
he added, which gives us the biggest possible hint of what they might have planned.
While there's nothing in
The Amazing Spider-Man
that even hints at Eddie Brock or his alien symbiote alter ego, that doesn't means that the already-planned 2014 sequel won't try to set something up or that they're eventually building to having Spider-Man fight Venom in a third installment.
Oh, wait. They already tried that.
Regardless, you can look for a lot more on Sony's
The Amazing Spider-Man
, including our own interviews with director Marc Webb and the cast in the weeks leading up to its North American release on July 3.

The Great Wall

Want to See
Spider-Man
and
The Avengers
in the Same Movie?
by
SuperHeroHype
June 09, 2012
At last year's Comic-Con, Avi Arad was asked about the potential of Spider-man and The Avengers meeting up on the big screen and he brushed it off. He seemed to think Spider-Man had enough stories behind him that he didn't need to be a part of the team.
Now after the movie juggernaut that
The Avengers
has become, he's having second thoughts.
When talking to
Crave Online
about it Arad said,
"Everything is possible. If something like that happens, it’s great for Disney, it’s great for Sony, if the right story comes in. We are now working on Venom first. It’s our first out, so our thinking is in the right direction. Avengers to me was an expected success so I never looked at it because Avengers was successful.”
"The way to make team-up movies work is to create the raw materials, both technically and creatively, in other movies first,"
he continued.
"Team-ups can happen once you create the character, establish the CG, otherwise it’s not affordable.”
What do you think? Think Spider-Man appearing in an Avengers movie is ever gonna happen?

Box Office:
Madagascar 3
Runs Rampant Over
Prometheus
Source:
ComingSoon
June 10, 2012
The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Click
here
for the full box office estimates of the top 12 films and then check back on Monday for the final figures based on actual box office.
After a great kick-off week for the month of June, two movies battled it out to keep the box office love going. On Friday, it was a fairly close race between DreamWorks Animation's animated threequel
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted
and Ridley Scott's sci-fi prequel
Prometheus
(20th Century Fox), but according to studio estimates,
Madagascar 3
came out ahead by roughly $10 million to win the weekend with an estimated $60.4 million.
Once again featuring the voice cast of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett-Smith, David Schwimmer, Sacha Baron Cohen and Cedric the Entertainer as escaped zoo animals,
Madagacar 3
, DreamWorks Animation's latest opened slightly higher than last summer's
Kung Fu Panda 2
, but failed to equal the $63 million opening of its 2008 predecessor.
After launching a week earlier overseas, Ridley Scott's
Prometheus
, starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green and Charlize Theron, won Friday with $21.4 million, just a million more than
Madagascar 3
, but showing true signs of fanboy frontloading it dropped to $16.1 million on Saturday and ended the weekend with an estimated $50 million in 3,394 theaters, roughly $14.7 thousand per site. The anticipated summer movie grossed $9.1 million of that amount in the 298 IMAX screens where it opened domestically with its global IMAX take increasing to $12.1 million. Internationally,
Prometheus
grossed $39.2 million to bring its overseas total to $91.5 million.
Charlize Theron's other movie, the Universal Pictures hit
Snow White and the Huntsman
, co-starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth, dropped to third place with $23 million having grossed $95.8 million domestically in the last ten days. Internationally, the fantasy revamp brought in $24.6 million in 52 territories this weekend to bring its global cume to $182 million.
Will Smith's own sci-fi franchise
Men in Black 3
(Sony) took fourth place with $13.5 million, bringing its North American total to $135 million. Internationally, it brought in an additional $38.3 million to bring its total to $488 million.
Currently the biggest blockbuster of the year (and highest-grossing movie since James Cameron's
Avatar
),
Marvel's The Avengers
took fifth place with $10.8 million with its domestic total at $572 million and global box office close to reaching $1.4 billion.
Remaining in sixth place, the British sleeper hit
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
(Fox Searchlight) added another $3.2 million to bring its total gross to $31 million, followed by
What to Expect When You're Expecting
keeping its 7th place showing with $2.7 million and $35.7 million total.
Peter Berg's action flick
Battleship
(Universal) took eighth place with $2.3 million and $59.8 million total, which is only a tip of the iceberg compared to the $235 million the movie has grossed internationally for a global total of $295.4 million. Sacha Baron Cohen's comedy
The Dictator
(Paramount) fell behind it with $2.1 million for ninth place with $55.2 million total.
Wes Anderson's
Moonrise Kingdom
(Focus Features) finally broke into the Top 10 with $1.5 million after expanding into 96 theaters. It's grossed $3.7 million so far with plans to expand nationwide on June 29.
The Top 10 grossed $165.9 million, up nearly 12% from last year when J.J. Abrams'
Super 8
topped the box office with just $35.4 million.
Although it dropped out of the Top 10, Lionsgate's biggest hit to date,
The Hunger Games
, finally crossed the $400 million mark this weekend, making it one of only 14 movies to make that amount domestically (not including inflation).
Opening in limited release was Daryl Wein's rom-com
Lola Versus
(Fox Searchlight), starring indie darling Greta Gerwig, which took in roughly $34 thousand in four theaters in New York and L.A., while the Sundance comedy hit
Safety Not Guaranteed
(FilmDistrict), starring Greta's
Damsels in Distress
co-star Aubrey Plaza, brought in $100 thousand in nine locations in New York, Los Angeles, Seattle and Portland, averaging roughly $11 thousand per site.

Is
The Hangover Part III
Heading to Tijuana?
Source:
ComingSoon
June 10, 2012
As production gears up for a May 24, 2013 release, rumors about
The Hangover Part III
are beginning to mount. It was
The Film Stage
who this morning noted a two-week-old report from
Life and Style Magazine
that suggests that the Wolf Pack might be heading to Tijuana for their allegedly final adventure.
"A lot of it will be shot in Los Angeles,"
a "secret source" told to outlet,
"but then they are going to do the crazy scenes in Las Vegas again and then one wild week in Tijuana."
Though by no means a confirmation of the Mexican locale,
The Las Vegas Sun
confirmed this week that the new film will, indeed, spend some production time in Sin City, shooting in and around Caesar's Palace and on the Las Vegas strip.
"Obviously we always envisioned it as a trilogy,"
director Todd Phillips told us
some time ago
,
"The third would be very much a finale and an ending... I haven't discussed it with these actors yet. [It would] not follow the same template, but is very much a new idea."
A
subsequent report
suggested that the plot of the third film may deal with Zach Galifianakis's Alan being sent to a mental institution and Phil (Bradley Cooper) and Stu (Ed Helms) having to break him out. At this time, however, nothing is confirmed about the Warner Bros. comedy sequel outside of the release date.
