Gary Ross Moves from
Hunger Games
to
Houdini
Source:
ComingSoon
May 2, 2012
In development at Summit Entertainment for
some time
,
Houdini
appears to have found a director in
The Hunger Games
' Gary Ross.
The Hollywood Reporter
brings word that Ross is currently negotiating to bring the story of the master magician to the big screen.
Based on the biography, "The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero," by William Kalush and Larry Sloman, the project
previously
had Jeff Nathanson attached to direct.
The comprehensive novel, published in 2006 by Atria Books, became known for insinuating that Harry Houdini acted as a spy for Britain and was asked to be an adviser to Czar Nicholas II's court in pre-revolutionary Russia. The book also portrayed the master escape artist and magician as a debunker of con artists who pretended to be spiritualists, leading to the controversial theory that Houdini's death was caused by the spiritual movement as payback.
In addition to
The Hunger Games
, Ross directed 1998's
Pleasantville
and 2003's
Seabiscuit
. Although he was expected to return to the Suzanne Collins franchise for
Catching Fire
, Ross officially dropped out of the project
last month
and the job went to
Francis Lawrence
instead.

The Avengers
Makes $80.5 Million Its Opening Day!
by
SuperHeroHype
May 05, 2012
Walt Disney Pictures is reporting an opening day of $80.5 million for
Marvel's The Avengers
in 4,349 theaters nationwide, building upon the $18.7 million from midnight screenings the night before. If this number sticks, it will be the second-biggest opening day for a movie ever, following behind the $91 million grossed by
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2
its opening day last summer.
In our
report
yesterday on the movie's midnight grosses, it didn't seem like
The Avengers
was going to be setting any records other than May opening, because it earned less at midnight than last month's
The Hunger Games
, but what a difference a full day makes. The extraordinary business the movie brought in Friday is a strong indicator that the movie may indeed break the current opening weekend held by "Deathly Hallows." In fact, we could now see the movie opening somewhere between $170 and 180 million, which would completely demolish the $169 million made by the current record holder.
We certainly know better than to "count our chickens" and breaking that record will mainly depend on whether that Friday business holds up through Saturday and Sunday--the film's rare A+ CinemaScore is a good sign it will have legs. Either way, Marvel Studios' first movie distributed and marketed through Walt Disney is already looking to be the biggest movie released by either, and this puts even more pressure on Christopher Nolan's
The Dark Knight Rises
and its release later this summer.
Internationally, the movie added another $30 million yesterday, having also opened in Russia and China, and globally, the movie has grossed $415 million, which means that it may have already made back its reported $220 million production budget.

Principal Photography Begins in New Zealand for
Evil Dead
Source:
ComingSoon
May 4, 2012
Principal photography has started for
Evil Dead
in Auckland, New Zealand and will wrap in early July 2012.
Ghost House Pictures is producing the remake of Sam Raimi's 1981 cult-hit horror film
The Evil Dead
; the film that effectively launched the careers of Sam Raimi (first three "Spider-Man" films); Rob Tapert (
30 Days of Night
) and Bruce Campbell, who played the Ash character and was co-producer of the original, now brings them back to produce an
Evil Dead
for today's audience from a screenplay written by Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues. Executive producers are J.R. Young, Nathan Kahane, Joseph Drake and Peter Schlessel.
Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (SPWA) and FilmDistrict have partnered with Ghost House Pictures on a worldwide deal - excluding U.K. and France - for Sony Pictures to distribute the remake of
Evil Dead
.
In the film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.
Jane Levy ("Suburgatory") stars as Mia, Shiloh Fernandez (
Deadgirl
,
Red Riding Hood
) as David; Lou Taylor Pucci (
Carriers
) as Eric; Jessica Lucas (
Cloverfield
) as Olivia and Elizabeth Blackmore ("Legend of the Seeker") as Natalie.
"This cast of burgeoning talent share the same spirit we had when creating the original," says Tapert. "The desire to deliver an unexpected and outrageously scary movie experience for the audience."
Evil Dead
marks director Fede Alvarez' feature debut. Originally from Uruguay, Alvarez studied filmmaking and communications, later opening his own production and post production company. In 2005, he won a scholarship to complete a masters in screenwriting in Amsterdam. In November 2009, he posted his four-minute short "Panic Attack!," which became an instant viral internet phenomenon prompting intense interest from Hollywood and Ghost House Pictures in particular.
"We found a brilliant artist in Fede Alvarez. As a director, he understands what makes a story work and how to put the pieces together," says Raimi. "I'm really excited to see this story, that I care deeply about, retold by such a fine storyteller."

Exclusive: Sissy Spacek Thrilled by Potential for New
Carrie
Source:
ComingSoon
,
ShockTillYouDrop.com
May 4, 2012
Earlier today, ComingSoon.net had a chance to talk to Oscar-winning actress Sissy Spacek about her new memoir "My Extraordinary Ordinary Life," which is released this week. While we plan on running that interview sometime next week, we were surprised to learn that she hadn't been asked about MGM's planned new movie based on Stephen King's
Carrie
, being that the 1976 Brian De Palma movie was a breakout for her.
It would probably be a racier story if Spacek hated the idea of them doing a remake but like with everything else, she had a great attitude about the whole thing, including the idea of 15-year-old Chloe Moretz taking on the difficult title role (which she talked to us about
last week
.)
"I think she's a wonderful actress,"
Spacek said and got even more excited when she learned that Julianne Moore would be playing the Piper Laurie role of Carrie's mother.
"That's great!"
she exclaimed.
"They hired a really wonderful director, very talented,"
she continued.
"It'll be interesting. Our film, it is what it is what it is, and it stood the test of time, but I think that's great, it's like an homage not only to the book but to the film, not only to Stephen King but to Brian De Palma. It's been made many times. There have been several television movies, 'Carrie 2,' two musicals! I remember thinking the first time there was a musical on Broadway, 'Oh my Gosh! The people who ordinarily go to the theaters, that's not really the audience.' The first audience of 'Carrie' has aged now, so I think out of curiosity, I think it's cool. As I understand it, they're not remaking our film; they're going back to the source material, to the book."
And Ms. Spacek even suggested she'll probably go to see that movie whenever it comes out, so if that isn't a ringing endorsement, then we don't know what is.
Look for the rest of our interview with Ms. Spacek talking about "My Extraordinary Ordinary Life" (available now at all the finest booksellers) and other aspects of her career next week.
