The Sales Poster for Neil Jordan's Vampire Film Byzantium

Source: ONTD!, ComingSoon

April 17, 2012

Production company WestEnd Films has revealed the sales poster for Interview with the Vampire director Neil Jordan's new horror-thriller Byzantium, starring Gemma Arterton, Saoirse Ronan, Sam Riley, Jonny Lee Miller, Caleb Landry Jones and Danny Mays. The film is described as follows:

Eleanor and Clara, two mysterious and penniless young women, flee the scene of a violent crime and arrive in a run-down coastal resort. They try to find money and refuge along the tawdry seafront and in the dilapidated hotels.

Clara, ever-practical, sells her body. She soon meets shy and lonely Noel, who provides a roof over their heads in his seedy guesthouse, Byzantium. Clara, always looking towards the future, turns it into a ‘pop-up’ brothel.

Meanwhile Eleanor, the eternal schoolgirl, meets Frank, a kindred spirit who unwittingly prompts her to tell the truth about her life. She tells him that Clara is her mother; yet Clara is only a few years older. She says that she was born in 1804; yet she is just sixteen. She confesses that she must drink human blood to stay alive – and so must her mother. In the small, quiet town, people start to die.

And the past that the girls have been running from for so long, finally catches up with them – with astonishing consequences.

Paramount Pictures Acquiring Aronofsky's The General

Source: ComingSoon

April 18, 2012

Variety says that Paramount Pictures is in negotiations to acquire Darren Aronofsky's The General. Aronofsky (Black Swan) will direct and produce the George Washington film, written by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage.

The trade adds that the storyline is under wraps, but they do know the script "is more of an 'Unforgiven'-like tale rather than a straight historical drama."

Aronofsky will first direct Noah starring Russell Crowe, also for Paramount. He's also eyeing to direct Judy Garland biopic Get Happy with Anne Hathaway in the lead.

Ashley Greene Featured in New Photo from The Apparition, Director on Practical FX

by ShockTillYouDrop

April 17, 2012

MTV has premiered a new image from The Apparition, the supernatural thriller opening from Warner Bros. opening on August 24th.  Greene shares the screen with Sebastian Stan (Bucky in Captain America).

Together, they play young couple Kelly and Ben who discover they are being haunted by a presence that was accidentally conjured during a university parapsychology experiment. The horrifying apparition feeds on their fear and torments them no matter where they try to run. Their last hope is an expert in the supernatural, but even with his help they may already be too late to save themselves from this terrifying force.

Director Todd Lincoln wanted to clarify with us one aspect that was touched on in MTV's interview with Greene: The CGI.  Lincoln wanted to assure us that while there is some CG used, he pushed for a cinematic threat that was created practically.

"The film was done almost entirely practical," Lincoln says.  "Spectral Motion physically created a full body apparition based on original concept artwork by Aaron Sims. There is only some subtle CG removal and enhancements."

From IGN:

Django Unchained Update from Samuel L. Jackson

Jackson discusses his involvement in the slavery western.

UK, April 17, 2012

Samuel L. Jackson has been discussing his involvement in the forthcoming Quentin Tarantino movie Django Unchained, explaining that the film will be an uncompromising account of a difficult time in America's past.

"It's definitely an opportunity to explore a place in my history that I hadn't thought about, and deal with it in an honest and very dramatic way" he told The Hollywood Reporter.

The film - and you should skip this paragraph if you want to avoid MILD SPOILERS - revolves around a slave called Django who makes a deal with a German bounty hunter to help him on his mission to hunt down a pair of murderous brothers in exchange for his freedom. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz.

Jackson explained that he jumped at the chance to make another movie with long-time collaborator Quentin Tarantino, and that his preparation included watching the controversial pseudo-documentary about slavery, Farewell Uncle Tom.

"Quentin pays homage to a lot of different genres" he added. "It's his take on those films. But it's not like it's something that's not part of the fabric of this country – and it happened."

From IGN:

Segel on Not Returning for Muppets 2

The funnyman won't even do a cameo.

April 17, 2012

We knew Jason Segel wasn't coming back to star in The Muppets 2, but the comedy star says he won't even cameo in it.

In a chat with The Playlist, Segel was asked about the sequel and flat-out said "no cameo."

"It was a very distinct choice on my part. Of course I was asked to do it. I did exactly what I set out to do, if that makes any sense. My goal was never to take over the helm over The Muppets. They have people who are better equipped for that," said Segel.

He added, "I loved working on The Muppets but, you know, it took me six, seven years. That's a lot of time working with puppets. I think I enjoy acting too much to repeat myself in any way. Muppets 2 would feel like repeating myself and I feel like maybe there would be no upside for me either. Well, it wasn't as good as the first. I know where to leave it."

Segel may not be coming back, but Disney has reportedly signed the original film's director, James Bobin, and co-screenwriter Nicholas Stoller to work on the sequel.

From IGN:

Alice Eve "Heartened" by Star Trek

IGN chats with the starlet about the franchise and J.J. Abrams' upcoming sequel.

April 17, 2012

Alice Eve may be promoting her latest performance in James McTeigue's The Raven, but she's also been hard at work on the set of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2. And while she can't say too much about the hotly anticipated sci-fi sequel, she did mention her own personal ties with the franchise.

"The most touching thing to me about Star Trek is my grandfather, who's no longer with us, was a huge fan of the series in the '60s, and he would always watch it," Eve told IGN's Scott Collura in a recent interview. "That was kind of my only knowledge of seeing it. Of course, I knew of Patrick Stewart's work. He's a very well-respected actor. But no, I wasn't really familiar with [Star Trek]. I had seen J.J.'s, though, so I knew a little bit. I've obviously become more familiar with Shatner and those guys. There are some really sweet, touching performances in that series, actually. Sometimes I'm really heartened by it."

Eve also noted her enthusiasm for Abrams' interpretation of the material, noting that his Star Trek "managed to transcend the shackles of the genre... I think that's what they were probably always striving for. J.J.'s found a way to make the future accessible to the present. He's able to track the story of the heart through this very heightened and stylized, tactical universe."

Eve can be seen in The Raven alongside John Cusack next weekend starting April 27.

From IGN:

From I Am Legend to Hunger Games 2?

Francis Lawrence and Bennett Miller join Catching Fire helmer race.

April 17, 2012

Add two more names to the potential Catching Fire directors list: I Am Legend's Francis Lawrence and Moneyball's Bennett Miller.

The Playlist has the report on Miller and Lawrence, who join David Cronenberg, Alfonso Cuaron and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu as prospective helmers for Lionsgate's Hunger Games sequel.

The Great Catching Fire Director Hunt began when Hunger Games' Gary Ross recently decided not to return for the second film in the Katniss Everdeen saga.

In the case of Miller, the director does have his film Foxcatcher possibly gearing up for a fall production start. Just yesterday Mark Ruffalo was reported to be in talks to join that long-gestating project, but if Miller gets/takes the Catching Fire gig, he'll have to put Foxcatcher off again as production could possibly start on CF as early as August.

Lawrence on the other hand is said to have an open schedule right now and is hence ready to get going on Katniss Part Deux asap.

From IGN:

Alba, Rodriguez in Talks for Machete 2

Jessica and Michelle could be reprising their roles in Machete Kills.

April 17, 2012

With director Robert Rodriguez in full swing on pre-production for Machete Kills, our first bit of casting news has just trickled in. Rumor has it that Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez are in negotiations to return for the Machete sequel.

Bloody Disgusting says the vivacious twosome will be reprising their roles as Sartana and Luz. However, as is fully plausible in the world of Troublemaker Studios, they could just as likely be playing entirely different characters.

Machete Kills, which sees Danny Trejo back in the title role, is slated to begin shooting soon, with Rodriguez diving into Sin City 2 directly afterward.

James Cameron Will Still Direct Battle Angel After Avatar Sequels

by SuperHeroHype

April 18, 2012

Since the unparalleled success of his Avatar and the plan for two back-to-back sequels, updates on James Cameron's other sci-fi tale, Battle Angel, have been few and far between. Today, MTV had the chance to speak with the filmmaker and, while the good news is that Cameron is still planning to bring the Manga adaptation to the screen, the bad news is that it's still quite a ways away.

"'Battle Angel' is just a great, kick-ass story," says Cameron, "..."[But] I see the good that the 'Avatar' franchise can do in terms of keeping a world audience cognizant of our relationship with nature, but doing it in an entertainment context. Ultimately, I think there's more good to be done there than with 'Battle Angel'."

Based on the Japanese Manga by Yukito Kishiro, Battle Angel is set in a cyborg-dominated 26th century, 300 years after society fell to a catastrophic war. The main character is a young girl in a cyborg body who, after being found in wreckage and repaired, realizes that she has lost her memory and doesn't even know who she really is.

When asked whether or not he might step back as a director and let someone else helm Battle Angel, Cameron admitted that he wasn't about to give the property up.

"It would have to be pried out of my cold, dead fingers," he laughs, "but on the other hand I don't want to take it to my grave, either."

The most recent update to the adaptation had Laeta Kalogridis providing the screenplay for the project, which would combine the first three graphic volumes of Kishiro's work, "Ido", "Alita" and "Hugo".

Taken Director Pierre Morel Takes on Bastille Day

Source: ComingSoon

April 17, 2012

Vendome Pictures has entered into an agreement with Anonymous Content to produce Bastille Day, written by Andrew Baldwin. Anonymous Content developed the project with Baldwin, bringing it to Vendome who preemptively acquired the material on spec before it became available to all buyers. Pierre Morel will direct the feature film.

Vendome Pictures CEO Philippe Rousselet will produce the project along with Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin, Bard Dorros, and David Kanter. Vendome will fully finance the production of the film.

Bastille Day is an original idea about a young American artist living in Paris and a washed up CIA agent who together are tasked with diverting an imminent attack on the city.

Baldwin's recent credits include The Outsider, his 2nd screenplay to land on the Black List, which is in pre-production at Warner Bros., with Daniel Espinosa attached to direct; and he is writing Logan's Run for Warner Bros. that has Nicolas Winding Refn attached to direct and Ryan Gosling to star.

France's Pierre Morel is best known as the director of the blockbuster Taken, starring Liam Neeson. His other credits include District B13 and From Paris With Love, starring John Travolta.

Vendome’s President of Production, Guy Stodel, and Vice President of Production and Development, Sarah Schweitzman, will oversee the project on behalf of Vendome.
