Joss Whedon Talks The Cabin in the Woods

Source: ComingSoon

February 16, 2012

As we near the April 13th release of The Cabin in the Woods, expect to start seeing an increase in coverage about the project's genesis and more, especially with a South By Southwest festival screening on the horizon.

In an interview with Total Film, co-writer and producer Joss Whedon (Marvel's The Avengers) explained the film is a bit of a reaction to where horror was over the last ten years and what he, along with director Drew Goddard, preferred to see in the genre.

He told the outlet: "The things that I don’t like are kids acting like idiots, the devolution of the horror movie into torture porn and into a long series of sadistic comeuppances. Drew and I both felt that the pendulum had swung a little too far in that direction.”

Whedon describes Cabin as a "loving hate letter": “On some level it was completely a lark, me and Drew [Goddard, director] trying to figure out what the most fun we could have would be. On another level it’s a serious critique of what we love and what we don’t about horror movies.”

Hugh Grant Talks the Wachowskis and Tykwer's Cloud Atlas

Source: ComingSoon

February 16, 2012

Empire magazine got a chance to talk to Hugh Grant about his roles in the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer's Cloud Atlas.

"I have six cameo parts in this strange, ambitious film," Grant said. "I do a lot of killing and raping. I wear an awful lot of prosthetic make up, too. You probably won’t know that I am in the film! But it was a laugh."

The magazine says that the actor described his characters as "incredibly evil". He added: "I slightly called my own bluff. In one of the parts I am a cannibal, about 2000 years in the future, and I thought, 'I can do that. It's easy.' And then I am suddenly standing in a cannibal skirt on a mountaintop in Germany and they are saying, 'You know, hungry! We must have that flesh-eating, like a leopard who is so hungry...' and I am thinking, 'I can’t do that! Just give me a witty line!'"

So how does he think the complex film, also starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Ben Whishaw, Susan Sarandon, Jim Broadbent, Bae Doona and James D'Arcy, will turn out? "I have seen little bits of cut footage and it is just astonishing. I probably had 20 shooting days, and each of them is shooting their own part of the film with their own crews. It’s remarkable."

Warner Bros. Pictures has not announced a released date for the film yet.

Gael Garcia Bernal Will Be Zorro Reborn

by SuperHeroHype

February 16, 2012

Douglas Fairbanks, Guy Williams, Antonio Banderas and others have played the iconic swashbuckling character Zorro, but now a new name can be added to that list as Variety are saying that Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal (Y Tu Mama Tambien) will be donning the mask of Zorro for a new futuristic reboot from 20th Century Fox.

A few months back, Sony hired writers to reboot their Zorro franchise, but 20th Century Fox have decided to move ahead with their own Zorro project tentatively called Zorro Reborn, which won't be set either in California or Mexico but will have Bernal's Zorro as a masked vigilante looking for revenge. Written by Glenn Gers, Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy, the project is still looking for a director.

Duhamel Says No Cast Members are Returning for Transformers 4?

by SuperHeroHype

February 16, 2012

E! Online is running a story with quotes from Josh Duhamel saying that he doesn't think any of the cast members of the first three "Transformers" movies are returning for Transformers 4 because "they haven't called me."

It's a possibility that not all (or any) of the cast members may return, but it seems a little early. Michael Bay just signed to direct the fourth installment on Monday, but he'll be directing Pain and Gain first before he turns his attention to Transformers 4.

Duhamel went on: "I don't think anybody's doing it. I know Shia [LaBeouf]'s not doing it. I don't think Tyrese or Rosie [Huntington-Whiteley] or anybody else is doing it. Whenever these movies make that much money they're going to make as many as they can. [But] I haven't heard anything about it."

If there will be a new cast in place, who do you think should star? Transformers 4 will be hitting theaters on June 27, 2014.

Simon Kinberg on the X-Men: First Class Sequel

by SuperHeroHype

February 16, 2012

MTV got a chance to talk to Simon Kinberg about writing and producing the untitled X-Men: First Class sequel, to again be directed by Matthew Vaughn.

He said: "I’m a huge X-Men fan. I grew up loving the comic books and it was really exciting to be able to do the origin story of Xavier and Magneto, and getting those two actors, [James] McAvoy and [Michael] Fassbender, were really amazing. So being able to explore those characters with actors of that quality will be exciting a second time around, and doing some things unexpected with those characters, which is the plan."

Kinberg added that the second film would involve a lot more Magneto. "That’s what was so cool about the first one and what we want to continue. Magneto becomes the villain ultimately of the franchise but he’s a much more complicated character as a young man. He’s someone you sympathize with, you care about you root for even though might not necessarily agree with his methods, you understand his philosophy."

You can check out the interview here.

Willa Holland Joins The CW's Green Arrow Pilot

by SuperHeroHype

February 16, 2012

Following the casting of Stephen Amell as Green Arrow, Katie Cassidy as Laurel and Susanna Thompson as Moira Queen, Deadline reports that Willa Holland ("Gossip Girl," "The O.C.") has been cast in The CW's "Arrow" as well.

Holland will play Thea Queen, Oliver’s celebutante younger sister who’s testing the boundaries of acceptable behavior.

The pilot is about a 27-year-old reformed bad boy, who after having spent five years shipwrecked on a tiny, brutally dangerous island in the South China Sea, returns to town a different man. Or to be more specific, a tortured, thoughtful master of the bow with a ferocious determination to make a difference.

David Nutter is directing the pilot, written/executive produced by Andrew Kreisberg, Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim.

Taken out of those areas, Zorro makes absolutely no sense.

Jonathan Liebesman Eyes Teenange Mutant Ninja Turtles

by SuperHeroHype

February 14, 2012

First announced in 2010, Paramount, Nickelodeon and Platinum Dunes are teaming for a reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Now, Variety reports that Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles) is in talks to direct.

Previously, Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway were assigned to draft the project with Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol's Josh Appelbaum and Andrew Nemec taking over last year. It is still unknown whether they performed a page one rewrite or if they updated the Marcum and Holloway draft.

The franchise, which began as a black and white comic book series in 1984, rose to tremendous popularity when it became an animated series in 1987. Following the first live-action film in 1990, the series spawned two live-action sequels, a live-action television series, a second animated series and a CGI feature film.

Details are few on the new version, but it will be produced by Platinum Dunes' Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form.

Warner Bros. Moving Forward with More I Am Legend

by SuperHeroHype

February 17, 2012

It has been a long time since we've heard anything about a follow-up to Warner Bros.' 2007 blockbuster I Am Legend, but now Deadline is reporting that the studio has closed deals with Akiva Goldsman and Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment to make another film. The original, made for about $150 million, earned a massive $585.3 million worldwide.

Acording to the site, "the intention is for Will Smith to reprise his role as scientist Robert Neville, who was the last man on earth doing battle with a mutated mob in New York City after an apocalyptic man-made virus wiped out the population."

Arash Amel (upcoming The Expatriate and Grace of Monaco) has been hired to write the script.

Deadline adds that the film is not being called a prequel, so it will be interesting what story they will tell considering the events that took place in I Am Legend. The site is unsure if director Francis Lawrence will return.

Will Smith said this was the idea about three years ago: "It's essentially the fall of the last city – the last stand of Manhattan. The movie would be...within the body of the movie D.C. and then Manhattan would fall as the last city. It's a really cool idea trying to figure it out...there's a reason why we have to take a small band and we have to get into D.C. So we have to make our way from New York to D.C. and then back to New York."

We'll have to wait and see if that's still the case.

Comic Book Series The New West Planned for Adaptation

by SuperHeroHype

February 16, 2012

Jimmy Palmiotti and Phil Noto's 2005 miniseries, The New West, has been optioned by Benderspink, says a story at The Hollywood Reporter. Gareb Shamus, whose now-defunct Black Bull Entertainment published the series, will also produce. The original description for the first issue (of two) is as follows:

Our story begins with a disgraced former Los Angeles Police detective Daniel Wise, who endures a near future deserted hostile LA environment where the Mayor has now been kidnapped and Daniel Wise is the only one who can save him, but can he do it with just a horse and sword?

Palmiotti's work has previously been adapted for the small screen in the form of a television movie and a series based on his original character, "Painkiller Jane." There's no word yet on whether or not Palmiotti -- who himself has dabbled in screenwriting -- will be involved in the planned adaptation.
