I would take Shang-Chi in a blue second, in his current Bruce Lee look or (better) the red pajamas with gold trim. I just wanted to play along.

I still want a Woodgod figure.

Truly, is there anything better than 70's Marvel?   Grin

A golden age for costume design and characters in comics, from Marvel, DC, Charlton, Atlas, Gold Key...

And it's not just because we were kids, right?

Honestly, no.  Shang Chi was very sophisticated for a comic book.  So was Starlord.  Marvel all at once had a sort of Renaissance of Horror, Science Fiction, and Martial Arts.  Typically not really kid friendly.  See Tomb of Dracula.  And Kirby at both DC and Marvel was dealing with HUGE concepts.  Yet it was all still fun.

I know. We were lucky to have those comics to read. I guess kids today are lucky that they're not reading.

Things have changed for sure.  The days when Marvel and DC were just umbrellas for the different universes is over.  Now everything has to "fit".  It used to be that Kamandi and Warlord could live in the same "Universe", just different corners or it, never meet, and you still knew that at some point they could if the story led there.

Now we have team ups and crossovers all the time.  Everything is connected like a giant spiders web.  It is the difference between a creator driven universe and an editorial driven universe.  I miss the days when Kirby, Kubert, Ditko, and Grell could all do their thing and no one in editorial blinked.

Imagine today a Marvel or a DC Universe where Waid, Ellis, Ennis, Morrison, Gaiman, Busiek, Brubaker, Robinson, et al, could cut loose and the editors would say "go for it".  Instead, they put on the brakes, pick it apart, and then take credit for it.  After they jam it into "continuity" so it "fits".  All part of the corporate "branding".  Fuck 'em.

And when it doesn't fit, people freak over it--including me. If you make rules, don't break them.

Raj, it was a joke/call-back to the AFB podcast. There are characters I don't care about or even dislike, but I wouldn't run somebody down because of their choices. Pretty sure you knew that already, but I don't want to upset anyone here. And like I said:

Been guilty of that myself.  Even recently.  Thing is, there were fewer hard rules back then.  Deathlok was in an "undetermined future" as was Killraven.  Stalker and Claw were somewhere in the DCU.  Just not a familiar locale.  And we didn't need an explanation back then.  Now an explanation is required for virtually every move a character makes.  And it fucking sucks.

Yeah, we may not agree on everything, but I think we know what we do and don't want in our comics.  Grin Thumb's Up

Not really -- though I do dig some 70s DC stuff -- especially early 70s, it just can't compete with what Marvel was doing. I love that the Marvel Masterworks are finally entering that era -- Iron Fist, Fantastic Four, Avengers, Defenders, Marvel Team-Up.
So many cool outfits -- largely ignored by Hasblo.  meh

Just to clarify, I fucking love Shang-Chi. The guy kicks all kinds of ass and he doesn't need metal claws or anything else. I've been ragging on Bowen for not making a statue of him for ages when he makes other stuff like Thunderbird and Gladiator (Daredevil villain) and Andy (Scott) makes a fair point that it'd be a niche piece and I need to calm down. I tell him to fuck off and he gives me grief back. It's all fair in love and war and he's entitled to his opinion so long as he acknowledges that if it's different to mine it's wrong.

Eight?!

I just downloaded 4 tonight -- and could swear it was only showing six episodes. Maybe I need to lay off the booze.

Any way -- I agree that Bowen should get around to Shang-Chi. Maybe do a bust first to gauge interest?

As for eppy 4 -- another good podcast.

What I really find interesting are the discussions comparing Australian culture to American culture -- like the Tang refernce -- which of course, was very pervasive in the U.S. -- especially in the 70s. Anyone remember grape-flavored tang? My brother was big on grape Tang -- and Carnation instant breakfast drinks (came in chocolate and vanilla).

Andy/Scott really seems to share my sensibilities regarding figures. I agreed whole-heartedly with his dismissal of the Batgirl statue -- where she effing drops the batarang. Can almost hear Erkel saying "did I do that...?" What the fuck DC? Only two years ago they released a Batgirl essentials with possibly the worst Batgirl cover in existence -- her worrying about a run in her tights (which though it was explained away in the story -- made for a piss poor cover).

Really curious as to which character Andy chose for his exclusive Bowen. Being that he's big on classic Avengers/X-Men -- and I'm guessing Defenders, I'm going to guess it's possibly an Avengers -- and one of the more obscure ones like Mantis or Swordsman. Don't tell me here!

Listened to Ep 8 yesterday, and have to say that since there were no out-takes at the end, I have to guess that Andy/Scott must be the reason there are mistakes!
