MattyX answers the Mess!

Quick, what was the greatest Doom Patrol story ever told?

Well?

Reading the DCnU is like trying to shit a brick.  It's agonizing.  While I'm one of the few people around here who thought there might be some actual merit in a relaunch, the execution has been just that, an execution.

Atrocitous interests me in a major way insomuch as there has been several implications that he will be larger than an average figure. I really don't want the figure but if it was Ares sized I'd be more excited about what the future could hold.

It was announced that there would be a name change to the DC figure line.

They will still be the same type of figures we have been getting but the focus will change to be more main stream with big guns. No more Kamandis.

They have said repeatedly that there will still be figures from all eras. That includes the nU so it's being called the the DCnU line by some.

We're mostly guessing when they say all eras they mean fairly modern to ultra modern.

The Sub was sold as a place for those who were not happy with the change to find some of the obscure characters and finish teams like Metal Men.

Starman (full mask/Alex Ross), Flash (Jay) Atrocitous, and Poison Ivy have been announced so far. Also Metron with his chair will be an exclusive to Subscribers. Every other character will also be available on the website.

We really don't know anything about the new retail line other than an admited change to more mass appeal figures and no more collect and connect which actually makes it nice so we aren't compelled to buy chin strap Barry because we want whatever the C&C is.

DCClassics.Com: In the SDCC interview with AFI, Mattel stated that Atrocitus would be a larger figure in the subscription than he could be at retail. What height are you targeting for him?

He will be the same height as Superman and Captain Atom. Standard 6″. At one point we thought he might be a bit taller but that is not the case.

Gad, fuck you and the optimism you rode in on.

So obviously the prices will go down with CnC gone right? Obviously...I mean there's less to the figures now... they're not sneaking in a $25 baf figure across 6 figure waves now.

So we can go back to our $10.99 pricepoint, especially since this line will have mass appeal...

Yeah...

The 2012 retail offering is still targeting adult collectors with versions of characters that will have special meaning to all of the fans.  The line will also be appealing to pop culture enthusiasts.  Our goal is to produce the same level of quality, articulation, etc. as we have successfully delivered in the past.

It does seem as though something has changed behind the scenes since SDCC.  Previously, we adult collectors have been thrown under the bus.  Now, we're being embraced again.  Mattel has had some kind of "come to Jesus" moment in that they know this line will die without us.  Having said that, I'm still bewildered by all of their other answers concerning character selection.  Going from the TNI answer about other media versions of characters being included in the line "including comics" to the statement that "All options are on the table as we plan the new retail line.  If it fits within the strategy, we are considering it!"  It's the second sentence that's scary.  What strategy?  Everything they've said prior to this weeks answers have made it sound like the new retail line would be heavy hitters only.

1. If the subscription is for classic characters and a way to complete teams, what was the rationale for including Atrocitus, a modern era character who is part of the DCnU reboot?

The subscription is to offer collectors the characters that they love!  We are leveraging the opportunity to introduce form factors (e.g., the oversized figures) and characters that might not have worked as well at retail, but we know that fans want for their collections!

Well besides that he's an alien, which they said from the beginning is also what the sub is for. And, he's pre-DCnU. Still, they got to the main point -- he probably wouldn't have worked very well at retail. And hopefully they've gotten the idea by now that this really isn't what we're looking for in the sub.

Who the hell said the sub is ONLY for classic characters?  And we have 2 RLs, so HE DOES work towards completing a team.  This was a really dumbass question to ask them.

But I completely agree that if DC is indeed taking control of character selection for retail, why wouldn't the star of one of their new books work?

I'm shocked that they answered the targeted audience question. Which, BTW, seems like we're the targeted audience once again.
