Haven't read it yet, but I'm going to let my wife loose on this. She's a big Billy Joel fan -- she may have some harsh words!!!!

I call them flops, but from a commercial standpoint. The article praises them from a creative perspective.
But I can take it, either way!
Wait a minute...

Now you're speaking my language, Marv.
Cold Spring Harbor is one of my top 10 favorite albums of all time. I bought it on cassette in the early 90s, and wore out two copies of it. I fell in love with a girl because she was able to play "Nocturne" flawlessly. Half-step too high or not, it's breathtaking, heartbreaking... except "You Look So Good to Me." I fucking hate that song.

Y'know, I'm glad when I finally resonate with someone, and I'm glad when people are introduced to something they've never heard of.
It's been so long since I played my vinyl copy of this album I'd have to go back and see if it's the longer, faster version or a vinyl re-release. It's amazing, isn't it?
Next time I'm going to reach farther back, probably only appeal to the music geeks here (all three of us). I don't think there's anyone here old enough to have really dug the stuff when it was new.

Unfortunately, most of this is lost on me, although to hear them I'd probably be familiar with some of these songs. However, you're inspiring me to want to listen to them, as I have a soft spot for Mr. Joel.
"Innocent Man," I believe, is the first album I ever bought on my own, not counting various 45s.

My first albums, bought when a local five and dime was going out of business, were the Beatles' red and blue compilations and Bob Seger's Nine Tonight. First single was the Carpenters' Please Mr. Postman. First cd was either CCR or the Everly Brothers.
Make of this what you will.

And that's the whole idea.

I once owned every album of his on cassette. Boy, that was a bitch to update when I got a CD player in my car.
Love Billy Joel. Favorite solo artist behind Frank Sinatra.

Just out of curiosity...you ever refer to anyone as a fuckin hump? A friend of mine from the Bronx often did, and I wondered.

No. Definitely a regional thing that does not extend to the bowels of South Jersey.

Ah. South Jersey. It just sounded so rich coming from him.
Have you seen Joel live?

Three times.
Once in 94 at Veteran's Stadium with Elton John; and twice in 1998.

Would like to have seen him with Elton. I have a recording of questionable legitimacy of one of their shows. Saw the Innocent Man tour in Lexington and The Bridge in Louisville. First time in Lexington he was so amazed at the response he did an unscheduled encore, running around to the band members to call for Big Shot. Also played My Old Kentucky Home at one point. Played the call to the post in Louisville.

Billy and Elton were great. Seriously can't say enough good things about that show.

Love Billy Joel. Love the concept of the rock piano. I know there are others, Elton for one. The late Billy Powell from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Leon Russel, and so forth, but Billy was a sort of American everyman. 'Til he got the one of the biggest houses in the Hamptons.
