I really think they will have a slow adoption process from regular DVD to Blu-Ray. VHS to DVD was an easy sell because it had multiple facets of quality improvement: no rewinding, more content on a smaller medium, picture quality stays the same over time, etc. DVD to Blu-Ray has increase in picture quality, which will matter to some, and more data capacity, which we've seen won't matter because even DVD's aren't filled to their limit before they burn another disc to sell multi-disc collections at a higher price.

I'm not upgrading again if I can help it. I've spent too much time building a DVD collection, and the picture quality is good enough for me.

John, if you get a next gen player, that's probably good enough. Blu-Ray (and HD-DVD) players will put some polish on plain ol DVDs. I honestly can't tell much difference between an upscaled SDVD and a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD disc. Once you get your PS3, problem solved. I don't plan on going back and replacing my current DVDs, but for the movies I really dig, I have been buying Blu-Ray going forward.
I actually think it's a good thing that the format wars ended so quickly. Nothing good could have come from people continuing to invest in HD-DVD technology for a couple more years. Blu-Ray is the better longterm solution, IMO.
I'm actually going to hang onto my HD-DVD player though, I think it does a better job of upscaling my standard DVDs.
SOny had an awful lot riding on this format, including the PS3, someone is breathing a sigh of relief over there right now.

I have just over a thousand standard DVDs and no HD or Blu-Ray, nor any intention of going next-gen any time soon. We picked up an up-converting player not long ago and the improved picture quality is incredible. I really don't see a need to change up before the films I want are not available in standard.

It really has more to do with HDTVs pushing things. Standard DVDs don't look good at all on an HD set. However, upconverted DVDs look fantastic, which is why I'm not replacing DVDs with Blu Ray DVDs.

So, with HD-DVD players getting clearanced out, anyone think it would be worth the bother of picking one up? That upconverting of exisiting DVDs sounds nifty, but since I'm bound to get a Blu-Ray player eventually I don't want to feel like I'm wasting the cash.
How low are the HD-DVD players going to go? Anyone seeing any in the $50-$70 range?

I have a Toshiba HD-DVD player and it upscales DVDs beautifully. However, you'd not notice much difference on an SDTV. Trade me some figures or something and it's yours if you want it (but again unless you have an HD set it's really not worth it). It actually upscaled DVDs a smidge better than my Blu-Ray player, IMO.

Sorry, I just saw this - didn't mean to leave you hanging on a offer.
Yeah, that's a trade we could do, but I don't have an HD set yet, but I'm not
too
far away from upgrading. Shoot me a PM sometime and we'll work something out.

I didn't check to see how long it lasts, but I noticed today that Toys R Us is having a 15% off sale on XBox Live and Playstation Network "points." Picked up a $20 card for PSN for $17.00, and may go back later in the week for a similar (1600 point) XBox Live card.

Damned XBox just RROD on me. Doubt I'll repair/replace it at this point. I play much more on PS3 now. Gonna have to pick up a few favorites for PS3 now, like Dragon Age: Origins and GTA IV.

I had a first gen 360 that RROD'd on me about 6 months after I got it. PS3 has been going strong for 4-5 years now...

I've had six 360's. Four died, then my elite is still kicking and I just got the Star War's edition.
Fucking Microsoft. trying to save money on that chip set cost them a shit ton of cash.
Still prefer my 360 to my old faithful PS3 though. Love the PS3 for gaming, and because of third party software it's nice for streaming content to the TV but if I'm playing a game, I would rather be doing so on the XBOX.

Do they have that shit figured out for the most part. I told my nephew that if he turned his shit around and got good grades, I'd buy him one (he lives with us). Are the RROD problems mostly solved now?
I like the PS3 better for all around functionality, BLu-Ray, etc....but the X-box does have better exclusive titles.

I'm trying to abstain from Mojo and the inevitable fight that I feel will resurface as it returns. I would appreciate it if everyone would respect that and not give me any. Thank you.

The RROD has been sorted out. It got better with the elite system and with the slim it's a non-issue. At least to the extent of any electronics device. The systems are about the same as far as quality and capability goes. Exclusives are a matter of preference. There are a lot of good titles on both systems. For me the major advantage of the XBOX is the controller, which I simply prefer, and the online component. The content, the ease of use, and the larger user base make it a winner for me. You do have to pay, but $60 a year isn't too bad.
