All Those Memories Will Be Lost Like Tears In Rain

« on: July 18, 2010, 05:42:31 PM »

I ran a search for a topic like this and couldn't find one.  Basically discuss your latest film perusals be they new or old, homeowned, netflix or ticket price.  Post the movie(s) you watched recently and a short "review".

Rambo II
Fun, not much else to be had.  The message is sort of tacked on but Rambo is Rambo and this is hardcore action genre at it's finest.

Chasing Amy
My favorite Smith film to date, though I like Clerks and Jersey Girl a lot.  This was really his first foray into social commentary though I admit you either like it or you don't.

Jackie Brown
By far Tarantino's most underrated flick.  Pretty much every thing about it is well done.  The cast/acting, direction, editing, music and cinematography are topnotch.

Raiders of the Lost Ark
This one ceases to get old.  Yeah there's a couple plotholes in the third act but the throwback to the pulp days is simply fun.  Kasdan's script keeps the whole ting on it's feet.  Definitely reminds me of back when there was still some magic left in the universe.

Got about halfway through Mann's Public Enemies last night until I got a bit bored.  I love the setting, and the 30's gangster stuff is actually one of my favorite settings, but the direction is so-so.  A lot of ill-concieved closeups and zooms as well.  It looks like he's going for newsreal shots at certain points but it doesn't seem to fit at all.  Not sure on Bale.  He only works in some things and is certainly not worth the hype he recieves while Depp is excellent to the point where I need to remind myself it's him.

Recent viewings.

The A-Team: Excellent.

Bunny and the Bull: Very strange but pretty good.

HellBoy 2: Seen it before but felt like reappraising it, cool but not as good as the first.

Burn After Reading: Absolute shite.

Next up.
Death Race (the remake) 'cause I like 'splosions... Grin

Hong Kong Godfather(1985): Good Shaw Brothers film. Very bloody and it has "Beardy" Lung Kar-Yan in it.  The end fight was crazy.  Got to love the 80's fashion too.

Inception:  It was fucking hot and humid here in Iowa and I didn't have any air conditioning and Inception was longer than Predators so I saw it.  Good movie not great, but I didn't regret seeing it.

Zatoichi and the Fugitives(1968): I really liked this one.  If you haven't seen a Zatoichi film yet go rent one.  If you like it you'll probably like the rest of them. Haven't seen the remake by Takeshi Kitano yet so I have no clue about that one.

Intrigued by a couple of those now, Jac. Thumb's Up

Have yet to give PE another shot.

My latest would be:

Inglorious Basterds
Just great.  Absolutely great and definitely my new favorite Tarantino film, though Pulp Fiction is still pretty close.  The writing is fantastic.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day SE
My favorite of the franchise. The extra footage is not to be missed particularly the scene with Kyle and the melting T1000 shots.  Definitely adds to my anticipation for big daddy.

Despicablle Me
Yep.  Was alright, certainly not the worst movie I went to see this year that's for sure.  A few parts really push the PG envelope though.

Took the boys to see Despicable Me. Liked it well enough. Though, in contrast to what you said, Toyman, I actually found it a little more juvenile than I was expecting. Not that that's a bad thing-- it's just more weighted towards being a kid movie than an adult movie, I thought. A fun romp, but kinda forgettable.

Also got Cloverfield from the library, my second viewing (first outside the theatre). Still enjoyed it quite a bit, though I was surprised how much faster it all happens, now that I knew what was coming. (Not to mention I notice it's about 75-80 minutes-- seemed longer the first time too.) The DVD extras seemed a little lacking, even thought there were quite a few, just nothing really meaty to 'em..

There were a few parts that just seemed a bit dark in tone.  Off hand the only one I can think of is when the blonde girl shuts herself in the spiked coffin thing and the juicebox bleeds.

But for the most part, yeah, it was very looney toony.

Been catching up on my backlog of unwatched stuff. Today's viewing:

Burn After Reading: The Cohens working in the Fargo/Barton Fink mold. If you enjoyed those you'll dig this.  Thumb's Up

The Men Who Stare at Goats: Great, great cast; pity the director had no idea what to do with them.  And I think the word "Jedi" was said more often in this than Star Wars. Yeesh. Thumb's Down

Black Belt Jones: "Who the fuck hit me?" "Batman, muthafucka!"  Thumb's Up

Green Zone: Good for what it is.
The Losers: Better than I expected.
Kick-Ass: Meh.
Inception: Dug it.

Dreamcatcher: Finally saw the ending. King's stuff still, usually, reads better than it films, but several times thought to myself 'This is a pretty good movie.'

I'll just rate them on the 5 star pro wrestling scale.  In the last few weeks, I've watched:

Let the Right One In (DVD) - ****1/2
Predators (theater) - ***1/2
Robocop (Blu-ray) - ****
Public Enemies (HD DVR) - ****
Star Trek (Blu-ray) - ***3/4
Diary of the Dead (HD DVR) - **1/2
Zombieland (HD DVR) - ****
The Crazies (Blu-ray) - ****1/4

The Crazies.  Is that the remake?
There's a flick I gotta add to qeue.  I've heard pretty good things including from a buddy of mine who is a hardcore Romero nut.

The past couple days it's been:

Total Recall.  Good but not amazing but still never gets old.  Definitely has a Twilight Zone vibe that I dig.

No Country For Old Men.  Didn't enjoy it the first time so much as the second.  Definitely a beautiful film as far as setting and cinematography go.  Same can be said for Brokeback as well.  Having never been to the midwest both really make you feel like you're there.

Yeah, it was the remake.  Don't think I've ever seen the original, shame on me.

I've never seen it either.   meh  Nor the original Dawn of the Dead.  It's on the list but always seems to get bogged down.  Modern day zombie movies (like the Resident Evils) seem to be lacking Romero's social commentary.

I do really like Oliphant though.

I found the Crazies to be unintentionally hilarious.
