by darthfoley

COBRA #2 - Serpentor's manipulations continue.  Deaths ensue.   Thumb's Up

Zatanna #14 - Zee fights off a Japanese succubus intent on capturing her slacker magical cousin.  Shame this book is ending, it really was a fun title while it lasted.   Thumb's Up

Conan: The Road of Kings #6 - Conan rescues the princess, defeats the evil queen, and sics a monster on an unsuspecting bad guy, but loses all the gold he was rewarded with in the process.  For Conan, this is a pretty happy ending.   Thumb's Up

Conan: Island of No Return #1 - Conan's dalliances have him on the run from the city guard, but he's saved by two mysterious female thieves who offer him a job - raiding an abandoned palace on a haunted island.  They're no doubt up to no good, but Conan has nothing better to do at this particular time....   Thumb's Up

Dungeons and Dragons #8 - Adric and company find themselves trapped in the Feywild, being used by gnomes as bait for the fomorians and eladrin armies soon to do battle.  But then Adric's girlfriend's dad shows up - which means things just went from bad to worse.   Thumb's Up

Detective Comics #429 - A strange set of occurrences near Las Vegas lead Batman to confront Kirk Langstrom about Man-Bat - but this particular giant bat *isn't* Langstrom.  In the backup, Jason Bard cracks a mysterious case of murder involving his upstairs neighbor and $100,000 he gave to Bard for safekeeping.   Thumb's Up

Secret Avengers #14
$4/22 pages - 18 cents/page

Once again the Secret Avengers are little more than guest-stars in their own book, even with the origin of Valkyrie thrown in.

Thunderbolts #159 - Underbolts/Group Therapy/The Ghost & Mr. Walker/Double Cross
$5/40 pages - 12.5 cents/page

A double-sized special for no real reason other than this book is awesome.  The main tale and all but one of the back-ups are great, with the remaining one being mediocre.  Always great to see Eric Canete as well.
Thumb's Up

Captain America #619 - Gulag pt. 4
$4/30 pages - 13 cents/page

Brubaker has to wrap-up his story arc so Bucky can get killed over in Fear Itself.  It's not a seemless transition, but this book is so much better than that turd that I can forgive Bru for not putting in the extra effort.
Thumb's Up

Mystery Men #2
$3/22 pages - 14 cents/page

Once again overly-simple writing with great art.

Flashpoint: Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown #1 - Weird War Tales!
$3/20 pages - 15 cents/page

I was so disappointed in the main book that I initially elected not to pick up any spin-offs, but word was this would be a good preview of the relaunched Frankenstein book, so I gave it a shot.  I'm glad I did.  Ibraim Roberson isn't much for backgrounds, but he has a clean style I can appreciate.  The story is mostly setup, but provides enough geek-out moments to get me excited.
Thumb's Up

Flashpoint: Secret Seven #1 - Hunter's Moon
$3/20 pages - 15 cents/page

I'm coming into this one cold, so I have no nostalgia going for me.  The story is whacky, but not particularly impressive.  George Perez and his imitator are though.

Cobra #2
$4/22 pages - 18 cents/page

Costa manages to weave three or four plot threads throughout without getting too confusing.  Only the art and a script error generate any confusion, but it's easily forgiven when Costa makes silly characters like Serpentor and Croc Master awesome.
Thumb's Up

Agents of Atlas: Versus TPB

Disappointing in that the Agents end up being minor parts in the book, especially the Avengers piece.

Atlas: Return of the Three Dimensional Man TPB

12 kinds of fun wrapped up far too quickly.
Thumb's Up

Gorilla Man TPB

Lots and lots of reprints to pad this out, but some fun yarns ensue.

Scalped Vol. 7: Rez Blues

Jason Aaron starts off this piece with a hopeful story about an old couple on the Rez.  Both of which are rare.  Then we get up to the usual hijinks and just when it looks like the younger couple will echo the older, he brings back a narrative device that shows just how different, fucked-up, and doomed the younger couple's tale is.  Aaron, you are a beautiful bastard.
Thumb's Up

Northlanders Vol. 4: The Plague Widow

A zombie-type story setup (without actual zombies) with beautiful Leandro Fernandez art.  It's nice to see Wood step up after the previous lackluster effort.
Thumb's Up
