by BigRaj
KRATOS!!! He's an angry fellow. Seeking revenge on Ares in the first God of War, Zeus in GoW II, and now all of Olympus in the third "main" installment of the franchise, he'll let no man, creature, or puzzle stand in his way. I don't have a PSP, so I haven't had a chance to play Chains of Olympus, but I'd imagine he's pretty angry in that game, too.
GoW III starts at the point where II ends, with Kratos perched on Gaia while she and the other Titans scale Mount Olympus to wage war with the Greek Gods. After a big battle with one of the more powerful gods, of course Kratos gets knocked down a peg (sorta like what happened in II) and a rift starts to develop between Kratos and Gaia. Kratos now has to work his way all the way from Hades back up to the mountain, wreaking havoc the entire time.
The scale of this game is immense. From battles with the most fearsome and swiftest gods, to Shadow of the Colossus-style showdowns with gargantuan Titans, Kratos always seems outmatched but you know better at this point what he's capable of. Similar to SotC, there is a certain sadness I felt after each boss fight, as you see the deterioration of the world from all of Kratos' chaos. More of Kratos' story is fleshed out, as are some of the main characters that have appeared in the various GoW games. That was a very nice touch. The puzzles are pretty good here, challenging but generally not frustrating. There is one in Hera's maze which threw me off a bit. The sound is just as good as other areas of the game. Hades' deep voice sounded great booming out of my subwoofer, and there's plenty of creature noise going through the surrounds. Lots of great voice acting, including Rip Torn and Adrienne Barbeau. Explosions, splattering guts, large creatures hitting the ground after being killed, it all sounds tremendous.
The graphics, of course, are tremendous. III looks much better than the GoW collection that was upgraded to HD-quality, which astounds me. Lots of detail, both on the characters and the environment. Visible pores, weapons, "goosebumps" on areolas, cracks and wear & tear on concrete and metal, beautiful lighting and textures: You name it, it looks phenomenal. Granted, I don't have the largest HD game library, but this game has the best graphics I've ever seen. Combined with all the rest of the attributes, this is a MUST HAVE game, and is the main reason I wanted to get a PS3. If you have a PS3, you need this game. If you don't, but are a fan of the first two (or three) GoW games, now's the time to upgrade! Based on the 5-star pro wrestling match scale, God of War III gets the full *****.
Talk about it here!
