CriticalMess.Net Mattel Q&A for October 15th, 2009

Degra asks:

"A lot of my local stores when they finally get in the DCUC figures are receiving mostly just the "Best of " cases.  I don't really understand the point in re-releasing characters like Big Barda, Dr. Impossible, Kid Flash, Shazam so soon after they had just come out in their regular waves. It is clogging up shelves since shoppers had only months earlier already purchased them so instead of wave 8 or wave 9 we have all these unwanted figures which prevents my stores from reordering and receiving the new waves.

Are you going to re-evaluate this "Best of" case strategy?  If you are going to be doing "Best of" cases why not at least revisit older figures such as characters from DC Superheroes like Cassandra Cain Batgirl, Knightshadow Batman, Steel, black suit Catwoman, Mr. Freeze, the original Two Face, clear Manbat or characters like Aquaman from wave 2 or the wave 5 figures that were hard to find--that way you would be infusing shelves with old stuff that for a lot of new fans brought into DCUC with wave 1 would be new and enticing.

I also wouldn't mind characters like Sinestro or Nightwing from wave three to see a new production run because the ones I have were made of lesser quality plastic and have a gray dust developing on them.  It would be nice to have these re-issued with better quality control a new run would allow and please don't include a stand but Grundy's Collect n Connect pieces because they have that same dust problem."

Big Barda, Dr. Impossible and Kid Flash are actually not “Best of Figures”. You are just seeing additional Wave 6 and 7 cases that were ordered. We will continue to offer “Best of” figures, but these will be the A-list heroes of the DCU like Superman and Batman.

Urbanmyth asks:

"Now that we've seen the pictures for the Iron figure, it looks to be a lock that a full set of Metal Men figures will be made in 6" form for the fist time.  I'm (and most everybody else) is very excited about this of course.  Since past interviews have noted that civilian figures are more difficult to get out in retail, any chance you are working on a Doc. Magnus and Platinum two-pack as a Matty exclusive in the near future?  This would also be a great way to get another much wanted female character released and not take up a spot in a regular wave since there are a huge number of other females that also deserve a figure sooner rather than later."

We do want to complete the Metal Men in time, but there is no Magnus/Platinum Matty.com 2 pack planned at this time.

Abstract Harmony asks:

"You've mentioned on a couple of occasions about getting some old archival stuff up on Matty. I was wondering if this archival stuff will involve the 'Girl's lines' or whether it's likely to be 'For the Boys'?

I have pretty much every book about Mattel written from the dry as a bone Barbie Collectors Guide to the salacious-for-salacious-sake 'Toy Monster' and none of them show me or really even tell me in detail just how awesome a company Mattel has been since inception pumping for the most part line after line of quality boys toys onto the shelves and into our homes.

I was wondering if there was any plans for a Coffee Table detailed look, with box art, photos and final product, at the entire history of boys toys/videogames at Mattel covering Hot Wheels right the way up to the Avatar line and going forward? A celebration of the rich history of the company and it's bright future in actively enagaging the collecting community.

(If there isn't then would you be averse to the 'know it alls' here at Criticalmess having a go at one?) "

There are no current plans for a coffee table book like this from Mattel.

Mr Blisterfists asks:

"While it is obvious that Mattel has plans for reissuing older, more popular characters, are there any chances that popular Build-A-Figures might see re-release in boxed sets in the future?"

Not at this time. But anything is possible down the road.

Multiple Members ask:

"First of all, thanks for making the Golden Age Charlie McNider Dr. Mid-Nite.  I think you've given classic, original JSA fans hope that like the Satellite JLA, we'll someday see the full JSA team (hopefully including Terry Sloane Mr. Terrific, Johnny Thunder, and Thunderbolt, Star-Spangled Kid, and Ma Hunkel Red Tornado).  But there is one character that may present a problem.  The Al Pratt Atom has 2 iconic costumes, hooded and masked with different details on his outfits. He was famous for being short (5 feet tall) and muscular.  So neither the generic male 6" buck or the smaller "teen" buck would work for an accurate representation of him.  Do you foresee his height as a problem, or do you view him as a "do-able" character when his turn eventually comes around?"

We have done many figures that are 100% sculpts, so Al would not be a problem to do correctly.
