by Chooch on October 30, 2011, 09:03:00 PMAll-Star Western #2 - Hex and Arkham find themselves outnumbered and outgunned, but for Hex that's pretty much SOP. Is he wily enough to take on pretty much all of Gotham's power elite? We'll see. In the backup, El Diablo stumbles into a town under undead siege as a result of an Indian curse.

Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker #4 - The truth about Butcher's wife is finally revealed, and it's no wonder he wants a piece of the Seven and Vought American so badly.

New Avengers #17
$4/20 pages - 20 cents/page
Watching the same battle from opposing points of view is a fun idea and Bendis plays it fairly well. However, I was distracted by the fact that Daredevil wasn't in the issue. He joined two issues ago and hasn't shown up since. They even put him on the cover. Also, Will Conrad is a decent artist, but he's no Mike Deodato.

Thunderbolts #164 - Golden Age Thunderbolts
$3/19 pages - 16 cents/page
The T-bolts put on WW II disguises to fool WW II Cap and Namor into thinking they're the good guys. A fun twist on the concept.

New Avengers 16.1
$3/21 pages - 14 cents/page
The idea of a point one issue is to bring new eyes to a jumping on point. With that in mind, Marvel made two curious choices here. First, Neal Adams is a draw for established or lapsed fans, but the elusive new fan would likely find his art scratchy, loose, and a bit old school. I'm a fairly long time fan and even I found it jarring to see his style on a book like New Avengers. Second, this is the beginning of a resurgence for Norman Osborn. Osborn has been a spectacular heel that could be considered a major threat since Ellis got him on the big stage, but a resurgence requires previous knowledge to appreciate. Once again, a lapsed fan could be roped back in, but a brand new reader would likely feel lost. Those issues aside, any comic produced by the combination of Brian Michael Bendis, Neal Adams, Tom Palmer, and Paul Mounts is going to be solid in terms of craft.

Daredevil #4 - Matt takes on the case of a young blind man with a gift for languages and accents who was fired for no reason from his job; seems the poor lad overheard a conversation involving Latveria. Think we all know who will show up soon.

Men of War #1 - Joseph Rock is given a chance to do more for his country, witnesses superhuman battles and earns a battlefield promotion to Sgt as a result of those battles. In the backup, a SEAL team is caught in a country they're not supposed to be in, and a tense firefight is the result.

New Avengers Annual #1
$5/35 pages - 14 cents/page
This comic is a hot mess. Wonder Man's turn is only believable if you think of him as having mentally snapped. If that's the case, his recruits make even less sense. We get a bunch of double-page splashes followed by a send-up to the Masters of Evil's invasion of Avenger's Mansion. That a group of also rans could take the New Avengers out so quickly is laughable.

Secret Avengers #16 - Subland Empire
$4/22 pages - 18 cents/page
Warren Ellis takes over the Secret Avengers and everything is a little bit... more. Cap's a bit more cynical, Black Widow's a bit more Russian, Beast is a bit more know-it-all, and Moon Knight is said to be a bit more crazy, although he doesn't actually act like it. It's a typical Ellis high-concept done-in-one with great art from Jamie McKelvie.

Punisher MAX # 16 - Big Jesus finally gets to Frank's cell, but surprise! He wants to bust Frank out so he can go kill Kingpin. Frank kills him anyway. We finally find out what Frank said to his wife just before his family was killed, and...well, I wasn't impressed. Good enough story, but the reveal was weak.
